Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. UNCONFORMITIES IN SHAKESPEARE'S EARLY COMEDIES, Kristian Smidt, hardcover with dust jacket (price not printed on the inner flap), 1986. BOOK CONDITION: near fine. The text block is in fine condition with no tears, dog-ears, or marks. There is no bookplate nor signature of a prior owner. This is not a library book nor a remainder. The green cloth boards are in very good condition (light bumping of spine and minor shelf wear). Tight binding. The dust jacket is in very good condition (wrinkle on front, light crinkling along edges). 8 ¾ x 5 ¾, 235 pages, 14 ounces. XX [From the inner flaps] Shakespeare wrote his early comedies at a time when an exciting fusion was taking place between classical and native traditions, intrigue and marvel, in the Elizabethan theater. His plays took impressions from the tautness and irony of Roman comedy and equally from the strung-out adventures of the heroes and heroines of popular romance. His grammar school education, which it is impossible to doubt, would have made him familiar with examples and precepts based largely on Terentian comedy, and the care for structural unity and distinct characterization which is evident even in his most romantic plays, reflects both his classical training and his natural sense of form. Against this background it is interesting to study the deviations from strict observance of sequence and consistency which abound in his plays and which affect theme and characterization as well as the course of action, or plot. These deviations, or unconformities, to use a geological term, are both great and small, but even the seemingly insignificant may be part of, or may point to, some larger disturbance in the composition of the plays in which they occur. Shakespeare cannot himself be held responsible for all of them. We know nothing of his intentions beyond the evidence of the printed texts. But the evidence is plentiful enough to allow certain inferences, chief of which is the recognition that his mind was open to the continuous influx of ideas and growth of interest and that he felt the need for continuous revision during the actual process of composition. It is no use denying that tidying-up operations were not always scrupulously carried out or that changes of mind or direction left surprising breaks and contradictions which, however they may have been dealt with in the theater, remain very noticeable in the texts, But they are important not only for the light they shed on the workings of Shakespeare's creative imagination but even more because his achievement cannot be truly measured without an awareness of his faults?whether they be faults indeed or merely geological discontinuities. [About the author] Kristian Smidt is emeritus professor of English literature at the University of Oslo. He has been the recipient of a Rockefeller fellowship at Princeton University and a Folger Shakespeare Library fellowship, and he has been a visiting fellow at Clare Hall, Cambridge.
