4to. vii, [1], [5]-523, [1] pp. Extra illustrate copper engraved title, copper-engraved frontisp., 10 engraved plates. Nineteenth-century half-calf over marbled boards, marbled endpapers, raised bands on spine, gilt lettering on spine (minor wear & scuffing to corners, some scuffing to covers, minor foxing & faint tidemark to plates from sizing, occasional light interior toning), still VG- copy. First edition of this scarce and practical work based on actual experiences by a Bengal Horse Artillery veterinary surgeon during the opening decades of the 19th century. The first two sections of the work focus on farriery, shoeing horses, horse feeding, as well as a remarkable range of equine diseases and treatments. The third section focuses on the development of English horse racing stock, the introduction of Arabian horse breeds into the UK, mustang horses in North America, wild horses in South America, and Arab horse pedigree, as well as extensive notes on famous racing horses, and more. The final chapters focus on how to judge the soundness of a horse, equitation instructions, proper tackle, horse breaking, and the essential proportions for properly feeding the horse. Veterinary medicine and veterinary surgery were still scarce occupations in the Georgian British Empire, even though horse cavalry and horse transport were essential units in the Royal Army, and the oldest English veterinary college was founded in 1791 in Camden Town. Skeavington (b. 1802) was a young Veterinary Surgeon with the elite Bengal Horse Artillery, may have served during the First Burma War, and was based in Calcutta from 1830-1836, before returning to London. Worldcat locates copies at (Texas A&M, Wisconsin, Glasgow, British Library).
