He coined famous phrases like "pursuit of the almighty dollar", "the pen is mightier than the sword", "dweller on the threshold", "the great unwashed", and the opening phrase "It was a dark and stormy night." The sardonic Bulwer-Lytton Fiction Contest, held annually since 1982, claims to seek the "opening sentence of the worst of all possible novels" Christian Bernhard Tauchnitz, German publisher, paid the English authors for the works his company published, and agreed to limit their sales of English-language books to the European continent. In 1841, Tauchnitz started his English-language editions, with the series "Collection Of British Authors". Although Tauchnitz's editions were authorized, and listed as the 'Copyright Edition', they were not protected from copyright infringement and he could offer no such protection to the authors he paid.

Written in a not entirely straightforward hand (although very much much better than that of his brother the novelist Lord Lytton). Reads: My dear Lady Theresa, / I am very much obliged by your kind remembrance of me and the very agreeable party to wh. you are so good as to invite me. / Very much indeed do I regret dining at Buckingham palace since I fear, [?], that I shall not be away in time to reach you at a decent time. If I can do so however you may quite see that I will. / Yrs. very truly / H. L. Bulwer .

TWO VOLUMES IN ONE. FINELY BOUND IN HALF LEATHER OVER MARBLED BOARDS, MARBLED ENDPAPERS AND EDGES. DECORATIVE GILT SPINE. A VERY ATTRACTIVE COPY.
Publicado por Richard Bentley, London, 1868
Leather. Condición: Very Good. None Ilustrador. An uncommon two volume set of biographical work on Talleyrand, Cobbett, Mackintosh, and Canning. Sir Henry Lytton Bulwer, himself a former diplomat, presents the lives of four of Europe's finest nineteenth century politicians in this two volume set: Charles Maurice Talleyrand de Perigord, William Cobbett, Sir James Mackintosh, and George Canning. Charting their rise to their respective success, Lytton Bulwer's biographies are detailed and informative, layered with a great appreciation and respect the author clearly has for his subjects. In two volumes. Binders stamp: Tuckett Binder to the Queen. Thoroughly explored, respectfully written, and not commonly found, Lytton Bulwer's 'Historical Characters' offers portraits of politicians and diplomats of the highest standard. Rebound in half calf with gilt stamped decoration to the spine. Externally, generally smart, with some rubbing and shelfwear to the head and tail of the spines and extremities of both volumes. Internally, both volumes generally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good. book.
