This work describes the holy state as existing in the family and in public life, gives rules of conduct, model "characters" for the various professions and profane biographies. It was perhaps the most popular of all his writings. In Five Books (single binding): Books I and II consist of chapters usually (but not consistently) alternating between Thomas Fuller's thoughts and beliefs as to what consists of "The Good Husband", "The Good Wife", "The Constant Virgin"; "The Elder Brother"; "The Good Physician"; "The Good Souldier"; "The Good Sea Captain";The Generall Artist; The Good Schoolmaster; The Good Yeoman; The Good Servant" etc.etc. with biographies of specific individuals in between these general chapters, eg., Lady Paula; Hildegarde of Bingen, Paracelsus; Sir Francis Drake; Joan of Arc; Queen Elizabeth; William Cambden, etc. Book III, subtitled: "Containing Generall Rules", delves into Hospitality, Jesting, Traveling, Apparel, Anger, Natural Fools, Marriage, Fame, etc. etc. At the Conclusion of Book III, Fuller notes: "To The Reader. These General Rules we have placed in the middle, that the Books on both sides may equally reach to them, because all Persons therein, are indifferently concerned." In Book IV, Fuller continues his (roughly) alternating chapters in which he addresses ideal characters -- "The Favourite"; The Wise Statesman"; "The Court Lady"; Book V has its own titlepage.: "The Profane State", with continuous pagination. Thomas Fuller (1608-1661) . Cambridge: Printed by Roger Daniel for John Williams . 1648 (with printer's device, seal of Cambridge University). Head- and tail-pieces and initials. Illustrated from engraved portraits. Instructive lives, all in Fuller's lively and readable style. It has been written that Fuller was known as "a perfect walking library". Manuscrito Ejemplar firmado
Hardcover. Sidney Saville Smith Ilustrador. Manuscript commonplace book, with dates ranging from 1882-1908. From the estate of the Larkworthy family. Numerous inscriptions, poems, and drawings, including one watercolor. Of particular interest are the first dozen pages of the album, which contain dozens of inscriptions by missionaries, often with a biblical quote, translated into the language of the region they had served in. The highlight is an inscription by the missionary to the Cameroons, Joseph Jackson Fuller (1825-1908). Born into slavery in Spanish Town, Jamaica, he became one of the first enslaved people to be manumitted in Jamaica under the apprenticeship act. In 1843 he traveled from Jamaica to the Cameroons, where he spent most of his life before retiring to England. During the last decades of his life he became a noted speaker on missionary efforts in Africa. The inscription from Fuller includes a translation from Duala, and reads: "Joseph Jackson Fuller Late of the Cameroons West Africa Loba lo e ndolo God is love Sept. 23rd 1897".There are over 20 other similar inscriptions by other missionaries with translated or bilingual quotes, with many from different parts of the Congo, India, and China. One additional highlight is an inscription by missionary and linguist James Legge from 1895, who has added an inscription in Chinese. There is also the signature of John Gibson Paton, who worked in the South Pacific and mostly famously in the New Hebrides. Aside from the missionary interest, there are some attractive pen and ink drawings, a pair of pencil sketches, a mounted full page photograph, and a watercolor by Sidney Saville Smith. Signed by Author(s).
