This study attempts to examine the occupational participation outside agriculture of women vis a vis that of men as recorded in the Indian censuses of 1961 and 1971 and assess the rural urban variation in the entire range of non agricultural occupations for India and fifteen selected states. It also seeks to identity those specific occupations from which women workers were being displaced during 1961 71 period as well as those occupations in which employment was improving and in which the majority of women workers were employed. The focus is primarily on non agricultural occupations. The changes have been investigated with reference to the two digit occupational classifications in the two census and within the broad framework of traditional modern and mixed types of occupations with a view to identifying the changes in female employment in organized and informal sectors of the economy. After giving details of the changes in female work participation vis a vis male participation at the all India level and selected states the study highlights certain socio economic and institutional policies required for increasing women s employment and for alleviating their current low status. 204 pp.

This book deals with two burgeoning issues of India abject poverty and high fertility that demand urgent solution. Otherwise India would remain a poor country though a software superpower. Most Indian demographers are not concerned with poverty fertility nexus. Suitable theory also lacks. So a novel theory the demographic field theory is presented herein explaining such nexus filling up a great lacuna. Many canonical analyses are performed between demographic socio economic and policy systems using recent National Family and Health Survey (NFHS) Census 2001 Sample Registration Survey (SRS) and Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) Survey Data making it most current. Causal relations between syndrome of poverty and fertility sadly remains same over time. The main purpose of this work is to draw attention of scholars and policy makers to this syndrome. All canonical results (1992 2004) very strongly proved that unless abject poverty and female illiteracy are not urgently reduced fertility will not decline. This is also necessary for demographic transition. This study being both theoretical and empirical synthesizing and policy oriented thus has made a seminal and path breaking contribution to demography population studies geography economics and social sciences. 324 pp.

Hardcover. Condición: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: New. 1st Edition. There is a great dearth of a meaningful study on migration and urbanization in India. Most are descriptive; they are neither analytical, nor theoretical, nor policy-oriented. Filling up these lacunae, the book discusses acute problems of distressed migration and urban involution in India, focusing on five Ps: (a) patterns of migration, (b) phenomena of migration-urbanization system, (c) poverty, (d) processes, and (e) policies. The book has three parts: while the first deals with 1991 census, the second analyses 2001 census, and the third pinpoints future issues and challenges. It has analysed many aspects of migration-urbanization at six levels: all-India, district, state, class I city, million city and megacity. About 221 million people moved in 1991, swelling to 327 million by 2001 (out of one billion), i.e., every third Indian is a migrant. By 2011, their number has perhaps risen to 450 million! During 1991-2001 alone, 96 million people migrated. So, the study deals with the ebbs and flows of one of the largest numbers of migrants in the world, the greatest in the human history It rightly emphasizes upon human dimensions of migration problems, lacking in most studies. It also unravels causal links between migration, urbanization and regional disparities, focusing on many burgeoning issues like poverty-induced migration, widespread rural poverty, urban decay, choking slums, rampant corruption, and widening social and regional disparities. Thus, the book envisages development policies and strategies, not only for the poor migrants, but also for the masses, for ushering in a just and egalitarian society. Such a seminal book is very relevant to the geographers, demographers, population specialists, economists, social scientists, urban and regional planners, management scholars and the policy makers.(jacket).

Soft cover. Condición: New. A BOOK THAT EXPLORES THE FASCINATING ARCHITECTURAL SECRETS HELD WITHIN THE WALLS OF THE RED FORT. The Red Fort and the city of Shahjahanabad, commissioned by Emperor Shah Jahan in the seventeenth century, have been subjected to the inexorable march of time as well as radical transformations enforced by violent change. Yet, the Red Fort continues to hold a seminal place in the history of the Indian subcontinent. Contained within the walls of the Fort are secrets of a unique system of sophisticated architecture along with the many stories of the various occupants and the lives they had led. Published two decades after the first edition the most authoritative piece of research and analysis of the Fort this second edition of the Red Fort of Shahjahanabad fulfils a long-standing demand for the book to be republished. With the aid of archival photographs, maps, architectural drawings, court chronicles, travelogues and other historical material, this architectural biography offers a rich and engaging narrative of the iconic Fort. Tracing and uncovering the original design and the layers of evolution of its buildings, the author, an architect with a specialisation in conservation, also offers valuable suggestions for the future well-being of the Red Fort and other historical sites where built and open spaces are inseparably integrated. This updated edition is an essential addition to the library of informed travellers as well as conservation professionals, historians and scholars of architecture and art and anyone who has an interest in history.
