Libro Original o primera edición
Hardcover. Condición: Fair. No Jacket. First Edition. 613 pages (complete). TEXT ONLY NO PLATES. A generously, avidly owned copy. From the library of Roy Hew Russell Stevenson whose most interesting ex-libris plate is on the front pastedown. Stevenson was a well-connected, diligent lepidopterist who is known as the first to put some order to Rhodesian butterflies. Included is correspondence of lepidopterist concerns, addressed to Stevenson, from Dr Patrick Roche (Senior Pathologist in Charge Forensic Science Laboratory at Oshodi in Nigeria, and from Elliot Pinhey, who became an illustrious lepidopterist as a specialist in African butterflies and odonates. Attached to a frontispage is a map of Southern Rhodesia which is marked and annotated by Stevenson. Captain Stevenson also signed the early pages several times. Rebound by Stevenson whose initials are stamped at the bottom of the spine. Half leather. The leathered corners and spine are worn, scuffed, marked. The boards are also scuffed, marked, with shelving, stacking and handling wear. The contents bear evidence of repeated use throughout. There are annotations. There are storage, age-related marks throughout. Paper-trims are worn. The pages are relaxed. Here and there Stevenson has inserted further notes both typed and handwritten. Despite all the distractions, the pages are clear, generally clean. They are assured and confident, diligent, magisterial in aspect and reality, bold and benevolent, bountiful and amenable. Please note that due to the weight of the book, should the book need be posted to the outside of South Africa, extra postal charges may be required. fk. Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. The French edition (text in French) of volume 11, complete text & plates, with the publisher's label pasted to the title page, and all published of the French edition of vol. 12. Also, loosely inserted is a copy of an Index to the Indo-Australian Noctuae, an unpublished work by Robinson, H. S. & Robinson, G. S., 1968, on 27 foolscap leaves. Pp. [8], 328 + 44 + typescript index of genera on thick paper titled "Index to genera" bound in at the rear. The last 44 pages are all that was published (in the French edition) of vol. 12 on "Géomètres indo-australiennes" The plate volume includes 64 chromolithographed plates, all with tissue guards, numbered 1-30, 32-42 and 44-49 (the typical complement for the French edition) and then 17 plates (numbered 1-14 and 16-18) for vol. 12 on Geometridae. The standard of printing of the plates is outstanding many heightened with metalic inks. Bound in later plain textured blue cloth, without titling. Very good with minimal wear. Contents clean and tight. A very good set of volume XI covering the whole of the Noctuides incl. Agaristides and the first part of vol. XII covering the Indo-Australian Geometridae. [Bibliographic note: This work is renowned for its outstanding colour plates, some of which required printing from up to 14 different colour blocks (including metallic inks), resulting in a quality of colour printing so excellent that it has remained unsurpassed. But this meticulous chromolithographic printing was incredibly expensive and labour intensive. The project was hugely ambitious - to cover every known species of the World's Macrolepidoptera, but it was plagued by setbacks including two world wars and was never finished; after almost 50 years the project finally came to an end in 1954. The most important collections of butterflies and moths were consulted including those of L. W. Rothschild of Tring, the British Museum, the Paris Natural History Museum, and so on. Comparatively recently, having been out of print for over half a century, a number of original sets were discovered in the printer's warehouse and these have been marketed with a heft price tag.] Size: Folio (32 x 25 cm). Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. First Edition. The English edition. Bound in two volumes; vol. I: pp. (text) [4], iii, 511, [1]; vol. II: [4] + 75 very fine chomolithographed plates. Bound in half leather and cloth covered boards, gilt lettering, good and strong with some light general wear and rubbing to corners and edges. Contents clean and tight, a little foxing to the front free papers. Plates are clean with ruled paper bound in between each plate. A very good copy of vol. 3. [Bibliographic note: This work, which was published in three language editions, German, English, & French is renowned for its outstanding colour plates, some of which required printing from up to 14 different colour blocks (including metallic inks), resulting in quality of colour printing so excellent that it has remained unsurpassed. Comparatively recently, having been out of print for over half a century, a number of original sets were discovered in the printer's warehouse and these have been marketed with a hefty price tag. The publisher tended to use the same casings for each volume regardless of how thick that volume was, so where a volume only consists of say 25 plates, as in this case, the binding/casing appear too large at the spine for the contents.] Size: Folio (32 x 25 cm).
