First edition. Large 8vo. xii, 228 pp. Publisher's blue-grey cloth, blue lettered to the spine and upper board with a matching illustration to the upper cover, dust jacket, inscribed on the half title "To Commander Giddy with grateful thanks for all his helpful advice & co-operation. from Peter Scott / November 1945". Frontispiece and 7 plates in colour plus 48 pages of black and white illustrations, many photographic, and further illustrations and charts in the text. A little wear and tear to the jacket edges, very good overall. Commander Osman Cyril Horton Giddy (1900-80) served in the Royal Navy as a young man, earning a D.S.C. for service during a raid on Kronstadt in 1919. He was stationed at HMS Beehive, Felixstowe in the Second World War and was assigned the compllation of a monthly review of British Coastal Forces amongst other duties. Scott mentions Giddy on p. 125 of the book, praising him for his "comprehensive" studies of warfare being waged and the "staff requirements".
