Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 256 pp, preface, introduction, Immigration; The Street; Adaptation; Work; Residence; Bintel Briefs (Jewish Daily Forward) with b&w illustrations throughout. First Edition, 1967. "The Lower East Side's tradition of aspiration and achievement was not generally appreciated until the author's exhibition was presented at the Jewish Museum in the winter of 1966. In this beautiful book, he has recreated that intimate portrait of the Lower East Side which is as compelling as was the exhibition. Lower East Side life had been documented fully by journalists, photographers, and social workers. The American press saw immigrants as curiosities deviating from accepted Anglo-Saxon standards and the best reporters of New York's Times, Tribune, and Evening Post examined every detail of life there. The Yiddish Press provided immigrant Jews with an opportunity to view themselves with different eyes than the Americans who saw them as curiosities. The 'Bintel Brief' letters to the editor of the Jewish Daily Forward provide one of the most sensitive and vivid records of the trials and tribulations of adaptation from the immigrant point of view. The Author has included the best of all these newspaper accounts in his book as well as 148 of the most brilliant photographs taken by Byron, Riis, Hine, and others; photographs which constitute a striking pictorial legacy of that difficult world." from the jacket flap. Price clipped. Inked name on half-title, else, Pristine, no wear. Clean, tight and strong binding with no underlining, highlighting or marginalia. Brown paper-covered boards with three-color lettering and illustration on front board, black back strip cloth, gilt lettering to spine, and decorative endpapers. Size: 4to. Book.
