Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. 1st Edition. ABSOULUTELY GORGEOUS Original brown cloth binding with amazing gilt design, spine lettered in gilt, spine and front cover richly decorated in gilt, red and black, floral patterned endpapers, marbled edges. Portrait frontispiece with tissue-guard, black and white illustrations in the text. Binding slightly cracked internally but still attached and strong. Interior clear and bright! First edition of this self-serving account by the Chicago police captain who served as the lead investigator in the aftermath of the Haymarket bombing and subsequent trials. In the affair, on 4 May 1886, a bomb was thrown at police during a labour protest against the killing of several workers the previous day; seven police officers were killed and seven anarchists were sentenced to death. The event is generally credited as the origin of International Worker's Day. The event led to a red scare in America, with mass public support for the police and fears of an anarchist threat to the country. Schaack's book is a product of, yet also fuel for, this scare, detailing the dangerous anarchist ideology and the threat of its proponents. Moreover, it serves as Schaack's self-justification - he was dismissed from the force for fabricating evidence in the investigation, and he here vindicates his conduct. Binding variants are known, this with a particularly striking design blocked in gilt and colour, others in plainer blue cloth; it is likely the latter were for the library market, but without any priority. Glenn, The Haymarket Affair: An Annotated Bibliography.
