The notes on the text form a sort of annotation. world war ii. middle east history. history of iran. military history. ~ This is the story of one of the great feats of the war, told bv Joel Sayre, who spent nearlv a year in Iran, and illustrated by Bruce Mitchell, who painted his pictures on the spot for Life Magazine. The job of the Persian Gulf Command was to deliver American supplies across Iran to the hardpressed Russians. Working in a hellish climate and country and against inconceivable difficulties, they delivered in record time 4,500,000 long tons of everything a fighting people needs. "On parade," writes Joel Sayre, "the P. G. C. resembled a bunch of weary Texaco dealers more than it did the Coldstream Guards. But this rather weird, shambling, offbeat outfit of General Connolly's, never more than 30,000 strong, turned in one of the great jobs of the war, and should be credited with a colossal assist in the destruction of a large part of the German Army. "If you had gone to Iran in the Command's early days and talked to one of its high~ranking officers about what it was up against, you would have heard something like this: "'The distance between New Orleans and St. Louis is about the same as between the Persian Gulf ports and Teheran. On the New Orleans end of our theatre we have to keep three ports going full blast, but two of them aren't much more than fishing villages, and the Liberty ships have been piling up outside them something awful while Russians are dying for lack of the stuff that is in them. Between the Gulf and Teheran there's a single~ track railroad, and whenever you dream of the tonnage that's got to be hauled over it, you wake up shaking. Once you've crossed the desert, you've got to climb mountains that rise to over 7,000 feet and the Iranian freight cars aren't equipped with air brakes. There are 220 tunnels and on the longer ones the temperature reaches 180. The train dispatching has been done over a single~track phone circuit and the dispatching might be better if those Arabs in the desert didn't have such a passion for bright copper wire. To exaggerate not very much, it's as though you suddenly had to serve all of Greater New York with the Coney Island scenic railway. " 'We have been setting up a truck route to supplement the railroad, but dust storms are chewing our truck parts away, and the holes in the road are so deep that the gas tanks get jounced off. On a 135 mile stretch there are more than 1000 curves at greater than 30 degrees. "'We'll not only have to feed and clothe and house our own people, but we'll have to hire and train and victual probably double their number in native labor, and we'll have to work everybody stretches that would make an American labor leader scream, in a climate that in summer is the worst in the world. Down in the port, it's 140 in the holds at midnight sometimes, and all over the desert at least 135 in the sun. We'll have to battle malaria, dysentery, smallpox, typhus, sandf.
