Publicado por The Eclectic Magazine of Foreign Literature, Science, 1859
Librería: Antiquarian Bookshop, Washington, DC, Estados Unidos de America
Engraving. Condición: Very Good-. From the November 1859 issue of The Eclectic Magazine; 1 pages; Steel engraved portrait of RUFUS CHOATE with facsimile autograph at base. Image measures 12cm X 16cm, plate measures 16cm X 25cm Foxing at margins. Engraved by John Sartain, Philadelphia for the Eclectic Magazine. The attribution line below this image reads "ENGR. BY JOHN SARTAIN. Phila." Although several of Sartain's engraved portraits of emminent Americans for the 'Eclectic Magazine' mention photographic sources, this one does not. Nonetheless, it should, as Sartain's striking head-on image of Choate is clearly inspired by a Daguerreotype made by the pioneering American photographers Southworth & Hawes -- Albert Sands Southworth [1811 1894] and Josiah Johnson Hawes [1808 1901] worked together between 1843-1863 from their premises, "Daguerreotype Rooms, No 5-1/2 Tremont Row, Boston". Harvard's Fogg Museum, The Getty, and the Library of Congress all have albumen print photographs showing the source image for this engraving, And it appears that Southworth and Hawes may have copyrighted the image in 1859; but it is almost certain from the evidence and the appearance of the rugged Choate, that Southworth and Hawes original image would have been a Daguerreotype. an art of which they were early masters. Another full plate image they made of Rufus Choate is preserved in the Metropolitan Museum of Art -- (showing a seated Choate, probably wearing this same coat, and of a similar age). Rufus Choate (October 1, 1799 July 13, 1859) was an American lawyer, orator, and Congressman. In the Senate, he spoke on the tariff, the Oregon boundary, in favor of the Fiscal Bank Act, and in opposition to the annexation of Texas. In 1856, he refused to follow most of his former Whig associates into the Republican Party and gave his support to Democrat James Buchanan, whom he considered the representative of a national instead of a sectional party.

EDWARD EVERETT Image measures 12cm X 19cm, plate measures 16cm X 25cm, foxing at margins. Engraved by John Sartain, Philadelphia. Edward Everett (1794 1865) was an American politician, pastor, educator, diplomat, and orator from Massachusetts. Engraving. Condición: Very Good-. From the April 1859 issue of The Eclectic Magazine; 1 pages; Steel engraved standing portrait of NAPOLEON inducing POPE PIUS VII to Sign the Concordat. Image measures 12cm X 16.5cm, plate measures 16cm X 25cm. Foxing at margins. Engraved by John Sartain, after the original by Sir D. Wilkie for the Eclectic Magazine. The Concordat of 1801 was an agreement between Napoleon and Pope Pius VII, signed on 15 July 1801 in Paris.[1] It remained in effect until 1905. It sought national reconciliation between revolutionaries and Catholics and solidified the Roman Catholic Church as the majority church of France, with most of its civil status restored. The hostility of devout Catholics against the state had then largely been resolved. It did not restore the vast church lands and endowments that had been seized upon during the revolution and sold off.
