3 volumes. Large 8°, nineteenth-century crimson quarter morocco over embossed boards (worn at corners, edges of boards), spines (worn at heads and feet) with raised gilt bands (worn) in six compartments, short title gilt in second compartment from head, volume numbers gilt in fourth compartments, marbled endleaves, text block edges sprinkled blue. Small wood-engraved royal arms of Portugal on title pages. Occasional very light foxing; a few leaves lightly browned. Internally near fine, overall in good to very good condition. 317; xv, 299; 232 pp. *** FIRST EDITION; a facsimile was published in 1988. Scholars had been nagging Frei Fortunato, the chronicler of Alcobaça, to publish some of the rich manuscript holdings of the monastery's library. Volume I includes an invocation to the Virgin on the hymn Ave Maris Stella, a discourse on the Acts of the Apostles, a catechism, an explanation of the Ten Commandments, a discourse on the symbol called Athanasian, short works by Dr. Fr. João Claro, and fragments of an early version of the Rule of St. Benedict. Volume II includes stories from Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, Judges, Ruth, and 1-2 Kings. Volume III includes stories from 3-4 Kings [sic], Tobias, Ezekiel, Daniel, Judith, Esther, and Maccabees, and on the capture of Jerusalem and the rebuilding of Jerusalem and the Temple.Frei Fortunato de São Boaventura (1777-1844) was born in Alcobaça, where his father was a bookseller. He took a Doctor of Theology degree at the Universidade de Coimbra and later taught there for many years. A distinguished historian, he is best known for his chronicles of the Cistercian congregation at Alcobaça. During the 1820s he launched a career as a political polemicist on behalf of absolutism, gaining a reputation as a lesser P. José Agostinho de Macedo. In 1831 D. Miguel rewarded his loyalty by appointing him Reformador Geral dos Estudos, and the following year he was confirmed as Archbishop of Évora. After the fall of D. Miguel in 1834, he sought refuge in Italy.*** This work not located in Innocêncio; on the author, see II, 309-15, 476; IX, 236-8. Porbase locates fourteen copies, all at Biblioteca Nacional de Portugal, two of them missing volume III. Jisc locates one copy at British Library, another at Oxford University. 4°, later marbled wrappers (slightly nicked near head of spine). In very good condition. 28 pp. *** FIRST EDITION. Fr. Fortunato attacks the Freemasons and their concept of amnesty. A page-for-page reprint appeared Lisbon, 1829. Fr. Fortunato de São Boaventura (ca. 1778-1844), a native of Alcobaça, received his doctorate in theology at Coimbra, where he later taught for many years. In 1831 D. Miguel named him Archbishop of Évora, but he resigned after D. Miguel's defeat in 1834 and spent a decade condemning the new regime. Fr. Fortunato wrote prolifically on history, philology, literature, bibliography, and published many sermons and funeral orations. After O Mastigoforo ceased publication in 1829, he devoted the years 1829 to 1834 to the periodical O Defensor dos Jesuitas.*** Not in Innocêncio; cf. II, 313 for O Mastigoforo. 8°, contemporary green embossed paper wrappers (some staining and creasing, spine chipped at bottom). Light foxing. Uncut. 61 pp., (1 blank l.), xxix, (3 blank) pp. *** Rare FIRST & ONLY EDITION of this chronicle of the life and martyrdom of D. Fernando (1402-1443), Infante de Portugal. One of D. João I's eight sons and brother of Prince Henry the Navigator, D. Fernando accompanied the Portuguese expedition against Tangiers in 1437. There he was taken captive and subjected to harsh treatment while feudal quarreling at home hampered, and eventually doomed, negotiations for his release. After his death in captivity in 1443 and the eventual return of his remains to Portugal, D. Fernando was termed the "Infante Santo" and venerated by some, though he was never beatified by the Church. The Summario is said to be a translation from a Latin manuscript in the Vatican Library, though the manuscript is neither precisely identified nor dated, nor is the author identified. It is supplemented with nearly 30 pages of extracts from other sixteenth- and seventeenth-century published accounts of D. Fernando, including an excerpt from Os Lusiadas. Innocêncio points out that, while many copies of the Summario were shipped to Portugal, most were lost en route; he himself had not seen a copy. Frei Fortunato de São Boaventura (1777-1844) was born in Alcobaça, where his father was a bookseller. In 1831 D. Miguel rewarded his loyalty by appointing him Reformador Geral dos Estudos, and the following year he was confirmed as Archbishop of Évora, only to seek refuge in Italy after the fall of D. Miguel in 1834. The preface to the Summario - indeed, the entire work - can be read as a wistful paean to the times when Portugal was unsullied by constitutional government, ruled instead by monarchs reputedly imbued with the purest sense of Christian duty.*** Innocêncio II, 312. Pinto de Mattos (1970) p. 568: "raro." Not in Palha. Not in Azevedo-Samodães, Ameal, Avila Perez or Monteverde. On the translator, see Grande enciclopédia XXVII, 431-3. NUC: DLC.

This periodical is a successor to the author's O Maço ferreo anti-maçonico of 1823. The first few issues were printed in Lisbon in 1824, but due to the author's fear that he would be attacked after the Abrilada, he suspended publication after no. 3 and did not resume until January 1829. Publication then continued through no. 12, totaling over 400 pages. The subtitle for nos. 1-3 is "Prospecto de hum diccionario das palavras, e frazes maçonicas." In later issues, there is much discussion of the Regency, constitutional government, and the state of Europe.
