vi, [13] - 196; xii, [13] - 154, [2] p. Wood engravings in the text. Indexes to both parts. Final advertisement page for Parkinson's Confectionary [sic] No 180 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. Contemporary black cloth, neatly rebacked with a replacement paper label. Inserted loose between the two books is a handbill 119x192 mm with recipes for NORMANDY PIPPINS and DRIED PEARS, presumably available for winter use from Parkinson's shop. Signature of E. Thorne Valparaiso 15/4/[18]48 on front pastedown and again at the head of the first title. Internally clean and tight with light toning of the margins of the text block. The two titles first appeared in Philadelphia in 1843 and 1844 respectively. The Complete Cook was reprinted in 1846 and in 1847 and 1851 the two titles were published together. See BITTING p. 355 and 466 for partial citations. The second item may be the first book on confectionery by an American author.
