Condición: New.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Ema Saiko Ilustrador. 1st Edition. First Edition (Number Line to 1). A fairly rare hardcover, this book is in very nice condition. You can see the black covers in the photos provided (I think it's very likely that the book was published without a dust jacket, as none of the handful of other seller's books have a dust jacket). The gilt lettering on the front and spine is quite bright. The edges and corners are in excellent shape. The page edges are very clean. The spine is straight and the book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout, and nicely tight covers. The pages are exceptionally clean. I scrolled through them several times without finding any instances of soiling. They're also quite bright. There are no markings. No attachments of any kind. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The pages have one imperfection, 20 to 25 of the pages have a top corner crease. When I purchased the book, none of the corners were turned down, that is all the pages were perfectly flat, so I guess the previous owner went back and flattened them out after completing the book. Due solely to the corner creases, most of which are quite mild, I have priced the book well below the other hardcovers, the majority of which are selling for over a hundred dollars. 'Ema Saiko (1787-1861) was a remarkably evocative Japanese poet, one of the few known woman writers of kanshi -- poems written in classical Chinese. Kanshi, because it encompasses a wider range of subjects than tanka and haiku, and with its greater length can offer richer, more sustained descriptions. Writing in this form, Saiko distinguished herself during the Tokugawa period, when composition in Chinese was largely a man's province. An exquisite painter as well as a skillful poet, Saiko followed in the great Chinese tradition of the literati-painter.' A leading member of three kanshi-writing groups, Saiko counted among her friends poets, scholars, painters, physicians, and other prominent people. She used kanshi as a diary, a canvas, and a mirror, weaving observations of her friends and of simple pleasures: intoxication, reading, painting, contemplation, the excitement of trips, and the joys of evening walks. Saiko's kanshi also reflected on the changes in her life - the growth and illnesses of family members, as well as her own physical decline. Organized chronologically, these poems provide an engaging portrait of an artist's life.
