His travels were undertaken some years before the German colonial occupation when the European presence, except for a handful of missionaries, traders and travellers, was slight. "Jalmar and Ione Rudner are well known both inside and outside South Africa for their work in the fields of archaeology and ethnology, having published many papers and articles. Jalmar Rudner was Honorary Curator of Archaeology at the South African Museum for thirteen years and was also Honorary General Secretary of the South African Archaeological Society for a few years. Ione Rudner is a staff member in the department of Palaeontology at the South African Museum. Their studies in many remote corners of South Africa, South West Africa, Rhodesia, Angola, Lesotho and Botswana are reflected in this survey of rock art in Southern Africa. During their travels over the past 20 years the Rudners made hundreds of tracings and engravings. Of these they have selected 60 to be reproduced in colour in this book, as well as numerous black and white drawings which appear in the text. The Rudner couple use their wide experience and knowledge to attempt to answer the basic questions of: Who made the pictures? When? Why? But they do not pretend to know all the answers.".
