This book is based on a manuscript presented to the Sabah Museum in 1995, almost fifty years after the events, written by the late Robert Knowles recording his recollections and experiences, after arriving with his wife and two young children, on the island of Labuan, British North Borneo, in July 1947. Knowles, who had previously served in Colonial East Africa, joined the Government Service of British North Borneo as a Customs Officer and Labuan was his first posting. The Japanese Armed Forces had occupied Labuan and all British and Dutch Borneo in early 1942 and remained there until driven back by the Allies in 1945. In 1947 Labuan, like the rest of North Borneo, was still reeling from the deprivations of the occupation and the destruction of infrastructure caused by the Allied counter offensive. Knowles gives a vivid account of the difficulties he experienced carrying out his duties while at the same time providing for the needs of his two children after his wife had to be sent to Singapore for protracted medical treatment. Knowles, a keen amateur photographer, recorded some of the existing infrastructure and the improvements that were being made, particularly the development of the military airstrip at Labuan to serve as the international airport for North Borneo, Brunei and Sarawak for the next decade. The book is illustrated with 67 photographs taken by Knowles.

In the early 20th century, the Silimpopon Coal Mine--the only such mine in Sabah (then known as North Borneo)--operated for more than 25 years in a remote location a few miles upriver from Tawau. Owned by the London-based Cowie Harbour Coal Company, the mine was staffed with European managers and engineers. While some locals were also employed, the majority of the mine labourers were Chinese coolies imported directly from China. At its height the mine housed a community of more than 3000, greater than the population of Tawau at that time. It was a self-contained community, with its own shops, hospital and police as well as the necessary workshops. A railway with Andrew Barclay locomotives provided the only means of transport to the Silimpopon River--for both coal and people. This book provides a detailed look at the Silimpopon Coal Mine. It not only includes many technical details (and illustrations) of its workings and accounts of the numerous technical reports commissioned (and often ignored). The financial (mis)fortunes of the mine are also closely followed. Readers more interested in social history than coal mining will be fascinated by the extraordinary collection of historical photographs which illustrate accounts of mine life--from the very primitive underground working conditions to the social life of the mine managers and their wives.

Both the North Borneo Railway and the town of Jesselton owe their existence to the ambitions of William Clark Cowie, who was elected to the Court of the British North Borneo Company in 1894, became managing director in 1897 and later elected Chairman shortly before his death in 1910. Appropriately, the first two chapters in this book cover Cowie s early adventures in the Far East and his rise to power in the British North Borneo Company. Cowie s ambitions to build a railway were tantamount to an obsession and this book records how Cowie completely ignored any criticism or advice from his staff in Borneo and ruthlessly removed anybody who stood in his way. The North Borneo Railway and the town of Jesselton have been inextricably linked since their inception in the final years of the 19 Century. Realising that the West Coast terminus of the railway at Weston was totally unsuitable for development as a port, after a few false starts the site of the town to be called Jesselton was selected, and a contract awarded to extend the railway northwards to connect the new town to what, at the time, was envisaged to become a Trans-Borneo rail network. This book describes the technical details as to how the engineering difficulties of the railway were overcome and exposes the extraordinary internal company politics that marred the early construction phases from the beginning of the project. It covers the development of the town of Jesselton, the establishment of infrastructure, and the almost total destruction it suffered at the end of World War II. The effect of the Japanese occupation and the Allied Landings in Borneo are examined. The book closes with details of the post-war reconstruction and development undertaken by the Colonial Government in the 18 years that elapsed from the end of hostilities in 1945 until Independence in 1963. The content of the book is carefully referenced and illustrated with over 400 photographs and maps.
