Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. First Edition. INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR, WILLIAM WARREN ROGERS, 148 pages including an Index and a Bibliography. About the time Henry Plumber was conning the citizens of Bannack and Virginia City, Montana, Stephen Renfroe had his own sheriff/outlaw scam going in Livingston, Alabama. Plummer while in his sheriff?s office ran a gang of holdup men and thieves and Renfroe while supposedly enforcing the law as sheriff had his own criminal activities going. In the 1860s Renfroe as a young man won the praise and admiration of the populace of Sumter County Alabama by helping to get rid of carpetbaggers, scalawags and Republicans. The grateful people of the county rewarded Renfroe by making him the sheriff. In this post, as was Henry Plummer (many miles to the West), he was able to engage in criminal activities with not too much danger of being nabbed by the law which was the Sheriff of Sumter County . which was himself, Stephen Renfroe. But over the subsequent years he was caught and placed in jail a number of times. However, Renfroe was not only a skilled sheriff and an able criminal he was also a versatile escape artist. And escape he did, many times. For years the legendary Stephen Renfroe has occupied a place in Alabama history and folklore (and to a lesser degree, Southern history). With this thoroughly documented study, the enigmatic lawman has been placed in historical cal perspective. The author traces his career from early manhood through the Civil War, and the violent period of Reconstruction in Alabama?s ?Black Belt?. His final years of sheriff of Sumter County and as notorious outlaw are closely detailed. Renfroe?s brilliant escapes as an outlaw made him as famous as his crimes. Signed by Author(s).
