Hardback. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 3 volumes. 719, 518, 686 pages. Illustrations photos maps in b/w and colour. Volume I: The story of a famous infantry regiment, told for the first time, contains not only the routine of the camp, the rigours of the march and the perils of the battlefield, but also, the peacetime frustration of serving in an antipathetic britain or a distant country, where the soldier's lot was sometimes worse than that of a slave. Throughout the trials and triumphs of the great conflict in Spain and Portugal, the steadiness of the 11th Foot persists. Their extreme valour at Salamanca earns them the nickname "The Bloody Eleventh". Volume II: Comprehensive account of the Devonshires 1815-1914. Its emergence from disparate units and links with militia and yeomanry. Service in the Empire , rise of the Volunteer Movement of Territorials. Diary sources more plentiful with better public education. Boer War involvement. Volume III: This final volume in the history covers the Regiment's great service in the First World War which culminated in the epic battle of 1918 when near defeat was turned into dearly bought victory.Brief years of peace and reconstruction of a sort followed, before the citizen armies took to the field once more. The History ends with the amalgamation in 1958 of the Devonshire Regiment with the Dorset Regiment. It is a memorial to all those, in whatever capacity, who served under the motto "Semper Fidelis".
