Hardcover. Condición: Fair. Here are two famous works of Rilke, issued in one volume, " Duineser Elegien , Die Sonette an Orpheus" by Rainer Maria Rilke. This is a very early post-war publication from Insel Verlag, issued 1949 in the French Sector of Occupied Germany (G.M.Z.F.O.) Paper restrictions were still heavily in force in Occupied Germany after the war, and thus this edition was issued using inferior paper. The interior is very toned, with the paper being considerably browned. The binding likewise suffers from inferior materials, but that is what the publisher had for making books. It is no wonder that Insel issued such a popular poet as Rilke as one of their first few post-war publications. Insel had been for many years a publisher of Rilke. Although Insel did not back the Nazis (at least thirty of their books were banned by the German government), the Insel publishing facilities were bombed during the war, and the company was , in effect, starting over from scratch. The book has an interesting Afterword by Ernst Zinn, a recognized expert on Rilke. TITLE : Duineser Elegien - Die Sonette an Orpheus AUTHOR : Rainer Maria Rilke (René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke, 1875 - 1929) AFTERWORD : Ernst Zinn (Ernst Richard August Zinn, 1910 - 1990) IMPRINT : Insel Verlag (G.M.Z.F.O. IS PRINTED at the end of the book ) PLACE : No place given [ G.M.Z.F.O. was the abbreviation of the Gouvernement Militaire de la Zone Française d Occupation (the Military Government of the French Zone of Occupation . the headquarters of which was in Baden-Baden. This book was printed under the aegis of G.M.Z.F.O.] DATE : 1949 EDITION : Reprint / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade hardcover (issued in French Occupied Germany); contains an Afterword; [112] pages; approximately 5 1/8" x 8 5/8"; gray, paper-covered boards and spine; title stamped in black on spine and front board CONDITION -- Fragile -- This is a previously owned book that was published in post-war Germany , under strict production material restrictions - the book has seem considerable wear, but remains serviceable, with the following particulars noted :: EXTERIOR -- Spine extremities have considerable loss of cover material; spine surface is quite toned; joints are rubbed; board surfaces are modestly rubbed, but title on front board is bright; board corners are bumpedTrade hardcover, with attendant loss of surface paper, exposing underlying cardboard. BINDING -- Holding, but tender - fragile splitting is starting at extremities of front and rear hinges INTERIOR -- Paper throughout is considerably toned (browned); there are a few edge nicks and small tears, but essentially the interior is clean and free of marking.

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 101 pages. Small octavo (7 1/4" x 4 3/4") bound in original publisher's green cloth with lettering to spine and rose window design to cover in original jacket. Translated from the French by A Poulin, Jr. Foreword by W D Snodgrass. First edition into English. This volume presents for the first time in English translation the French poems of Rainer Maria Rilke. Most of the poems were composed after Rilke's great outpouring of 1922, which gave us the Duino Elegies and Sonnets to Orpheus, surely among the greatest achievements of modern poetry. We have here the surprising phenomenon of a treat German poet turning at the end of his life to the writing of poems in another language, a 'foreign' language (though Rilke had lived in France and translated the work of Baudelaire, Valery, Mallarme and others). When the poems first appeared in two Paris literary journals, he was attacked in the German press. In Rilke's response to that criticism, he said that he might have called the poems Side-hours "in which, however, a main feeling finds expression." W D Snodgrass points out in his Foreword to this book that in "translating the Sonnets and the Elegies, Poulin was forced to sojourn in Rilke's native tongue, one alien to him. Translating the The Roses and the Windows where Rilke leaves his native language, Poulin is restored to his. A Poulin, Jr follows his magnificent translations of the Elegies and Sonnets with these translations from Rilke's French, these fragile, joyous explorations of the spirit that give us a new and fuller appreciation of Rilke and his work. This translation is accompanied by the French original on facing pages. René Karl Wilhelm Johann Josef Maria Rilke (4 December 1875 ¿ 29 December 1926) ¿ better known as Rainer Maria Rilke ¿ was a Bohemian-Austrian poet and novelist, "widely recognized as one of the most lyrically intense German-language poets", writing in both verse and highly lyrical prose. Several critics have described Rilke's work as inherently "mystical". His writings include one novel, several collections of poetry, and several volumes of correspondence in which he invokes haunting images that focus on the difficulty of communion with the ineffable in an age of disbelief, solitude, and profound anxiety. These deeply existential themes tend to position him as a transitional figure between the traditional and the modernist writers. Condition: Lacks front free end paper. Jacket light lightly soiled else a fine copy in a near fine jacket.

One and one half pages (22 lines), in ink on recto and verso of top panel of folded octavo sheet of engraved letterhead of the "Hotel Victoria Bozen." Horizontal fold for mailing, short separation from outer margin at fold, otherwise very good, accompanied by the original mailing envelope, addressed in Rilke's hand. Rilke writes to his Munich friend, the German- American writer and future chemist/inventor, Nathan Sulzberger, then staying at the Britannia Hotel in Vienna. Sulzberger, raised in comfortable circumstances, had invited Rilke for a three week tour of Italy, but Rilke thought the offer too generous and they settled on a shorter stay in Venice. Rilke stayed with him for three days, then traveled to Bozen where he wrote Sulzberger this letter of thanks. George Schoolfield, in YOUNG RILKE AND HIS TIME (pp.281-2), discusses the context of this letter and its implications, as does Freedman, LIFE OF A POET: RAINER MARIA RILKE, (pp. 57, 58 and 73).
