Marbled paper covered boards with green leather corners and gilt decorated spine. Leather title labels on the spines. Marbled end papers. Illustrated with frontispiece engraved portraits volume 1 and volume 3. Covers are shelf worn and edge worn. Leather is rubbed along the joints, on the spines, and corners. Scattered foxing to the contents. Text is browned. Contents lightly shaken volumes 2 and 3. Hinges mostly in good shape with a thin crack in front volume 3. Illustrated bookplates of Eugene Muse Mitchell on the front paste downs of all three volumes with "Mrs." written in hand next to Eugene's name on the label. An undated note written on the verso of the right front flyleaf volume 3 reads - "This was a book of my mother Maybelle Stephens Mitchell. She was never in the habit of signing her name in her books - Stephens Mitchell." Provenance from the estate of the Mitchell family in Atlanta, Georgia. Eugene Muse Mitchell (1866-1944) was born in Atlanta in 1866 to Russell Crawford Mitchell and Deborah Margaret Sweet. He graduated from the University of Georgia law school in 1886. He was an Atlanta attorney, co-founder of the Atlanta Historical Society, and father of Stephens Mitchell and Margaret Mitchell author of Gone With the Wind. His wife was Mary Isabel "Maybelle" Stephens. Mary Isabel "Maybelle" Stephens Mitchell (1872-1919) was a suffragist, political activist, member of the Atlanta Woman's Club and a devout Catholic. She was the mother of Margaret and Stephens Mitchell. Her father was John Stephens and her mother was Annie Fitzgerald Stephens. Maybelle attended the Villa Maria Convent in Quebec and the Atlanta Female Seminary Institute graduating in 1892. She married Eugene Muse Mitchell in 1893. She died in the 1919 flu outbreak.
