Condición: Good. Most items will be dispatched the same or the next working day. A good condition copy with no dust jacket or hardcover boards. Previous owner has created a front cover and spine label with foxing to the cover. Other than the missing boards the book is in good condition. There is tanning/foxing to the textblock and endpapers, but the binding remains in very good condition. Main body of text shows signs of foxing but this does not detract from the reading experience. If you can overlook the missing boards this really is a good condition book for its age.

Hardcover. 359 p.; 19 cm. 1826 preface: 'I have also to acknowledge assistance received from several friends, who have at various times suggested remarks and alterations. But I cannot avoid particularizing the Rev. J.Newman,Fellow of Oriel College, who actually composed a considerable portion of the work as it now stands, from manuscripts not designed for publication, and who is the original author of several pages.' - In 1852 Newman wrote: 'When I was elected fellow of Oriel thirty years ago, I was so shy and bashful no one could make me say a word or know what to make of me--so, I was committed to Dr Whately's care, then married and in lodgings,to bring me out. He most kindly undertook the task, and all the severe things he has saidof me since, cannot make me forget what I then owed to him. .He used to take me out walking and riding, and used to talk; and thus he was the first person who opened my mind, that is,who gave it ideas and principles to cogitate upon. He showed me some MS dialogues of his on Logic,to me quite a new subject, for I had despised it; I copied them out; and then he proposed to me, partly because, I suppose, he wished to be saved the trouble of going over the same ground twice,to turn them into the shape of a treatise for the Encyclopedia Metropolitana.I can claim nothing besides the few pages on the history of Logic. .However, when I came to look into the book I was pained to find he had added an Appendix.[on]theological subjects. In these I had always differed from him, even to his face. .His influence over me ceased altogether in 1828, being superseded by that of Mr Keble and Mr Froude.' Soft cover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. 38 pages. 215x140mm. Original printed grey wrappers. Two page publisher's list of the authors works at end. Although printed in England, this sermon was co-published with Hodges and Smith, Dublin. A footnote on page 35 has been struck through with black ink, but is still readable. *The Archbishop opens this address with the sentence, "These are times my Reverend Brethren, in which (as no one, I conceive can doubt) an unusual degree of agitation prevails, among all who feel an interest in what pertains to Religion." Outlining the dangers inherent in change, he admonishes those who would consider some teachings of the Church unsound, yet continue to receive emoluments and personal advantage from the same institution. In this he uses the analogy of the Club, which "though not compelling anyone to become, or to remain a member, yet requires every member, while he continues such, to comply with its regulations." Defending those who would be on guard against false doctrines the author remarks "A city which has successfully withstood a siege, will often be found, after a long interval of peace, with its fortifications decayed, and its suburbs crowded with houses and plantations, that may afford shelter to an assailing enemy. And any one who, in a time of peace, foresees this possible danger, and wishes to put the city into a defensible state, will perhaps be censured as an alarmist, and as seeking to cause unnecessary expense and labour."* **RARE** A fine copy without any damage or library stamps. Slipped in is a photocopy of a 1978 Notes and Queries review by Simon Blackburn of 1976 limited 98 pp. edition (200 copies) titled 'Archbishop King's Sermon on Predestination' by Cadenus Press (Monkstown, Ireland) intro & ed. by D.Berman and A. Carpenter respectively. This very usefully sets the work in the context of contemporary philosophy and the scientific revolution, suggesting many of Berkeley's concerns were 'rooted in the controversies surrounding King's position'. Very scarce and only subsequent, also very scarce, 1976 ed. seems to have been issued since. Despite its faults this remains a very acceptable copy for academic and research purposes.
