The Reverend Josias Leslie Porter was sent to Damascus as a missionary in 1849 and stayed for 10 years, This book not only covers Syria, but also the Jordan and the Dead Sea; Jerusalem and its environs: Jerusalem, The Tombs of the Holy City, Olivet and Bethany, The Battle-fields of Gibeon, Galilee, the Sea-Coast, Lebanon, Hamath and the Northern Border of Israel, Palmyra, Damascus etc. So an interesting first hand account of what it was like there in the 1850s, before all the fighting and wars (and some leaders) wrecked and destroyed many of the sites forever.
