4to; original pale grey cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, with gilt device to upper cover; dustwrapper; tinted top edge; pp. 166, incl. index; plates; plans; line drawings. Dustwrapper rubbed and edgeworn, with some loss to head of spine panel; faint damp stain to tail of spine and small part of bottom edges; endpapers and edges somewhat foxed, occasional fox spot elsewhere. Good condition. "This book is an attempt to chronicle the life of those brave men and women who founded the first settlement and later established the Colony of the Cape of Good Hope, thus laying the foundations of European South Africa. The period covered, 1652 to 1833, is one in which the most important towns were laid out and the finest buildings and craftsmanship were produced. Under the Dutch in the eighteenth century and the English in the early nineteenth century, town planning, civic and domestic architecture and furniture in South Africa reached a standard which has made this country deservedly world famous and I have endeavoured to describe and illustrate the work then done.".

Hardback quarto, dustjacket, very good condition (in good dustjacket), black & white frontispiece, black & white photos, gilt illustration front cover, plans, boards little faded, small mark fore-edge front cover, some edgewear jacket (light foxing & toning reverse side, few closed tears, white background slightly toned & rubbed, spine ends & corners scuffed). 166 pp. G. E. Pearse, a well known authority on the early architecture of South Africa, has written about the historical background to the buildings illustrated, and provides some history about the life and customs of the people who built the homes. A number of early nineteenth century buildings, which show the influence of the then prevailing Georgian and Regency architecture in England, have been included. The period covered, 1652 to 1833, is one in which the finest buildings, furniture and craftsmanship were produced at the Cape.

Large 4to; original powder blue cloth, lettered in gilt on spine, and with gilt publisher's device to upper cover; dustwrapper; tinted top edge; pp. xi + (iii) + 49 + (i) + (113) + (vii), incl. index; plans, monochrome photographs and line drawings. Dustwrapper a little sunned, and somewhat worn, with clipped corner to lower flap, and earlier owner's tape repairs; corners of boards slightly bumped; a little foxing to edges; occasional fox spot elsewhere. A very good example of this celebrated monograph. "This is a new edition of what has become widely accepted as a classic and pioneering study of a subject of established importance. Originally published in 1933, Professor Pearse was the first to consider and describe the Cape architecture of the 18th century as an independent style, and to examine this within its historical perspective. In the cultural development of South Africa, there has been no greater achievement. . The glory of this large format book is the illustration. There are 36 line drawings in the text; and 111 plates that present 59 photographic studies, and 80 superbly-executed architectural drawings from measured details. In this edition, many of the subjects were newly-photographed by Willem Malherbe and by Hans Fransen (who was responsible for the selection of the new photographs), and the majority of the details were reproduced from the original drawings. The plates are fully described in extensive notes.".
