Its more than 3,000 entries ~ by art historians and other specialists on national and regional schools of art, and on styles, techniques, design, and iconography ~make up altogether a volume of extraordinary scope and comprehensiveness. Short biographies of painters, sculptors, and architects are included, and definitions of artistic and architectural terms as well. Copious cross~references help the reader supplement the information in any one entry. There are separate bibliographies for a number of articles on general subjects, and a large selective bibliography concludes the work. The locations of various art objects are often provided as well. The many contributors, while experts in their respective fields, assume no specialized knowledge on the reader's part. THE OXFORD COMPANION TO ART is a handbook rather than an encyclopedia, and its individual entries offer a preliminary overview and orientation, and an invitation to further study~with sufficient detail to give the reader a base for his own aesthetic judgments. Numerous illustrations clarify historical or technical points of style (nine distinctive types of column capitals are shown for the entry on Capital) for example; the term Grotesque is defined and photographically illustrated, and something of its history is given; and Stone Age Art in Europe is accompanied by a reproduction of a cave painting from Lascaux. Additional figures illustrate architectural devices and ornamental modes. Subjects of broad artistic importance ~perspective or color, for instance~ are treated at some length, but passing fads in art receive summary treatment. The editor's effort throughout has been, insofar as possible, to give the reader "a central body of fairly well established fact and opinion against which he can judge the fluctuating diversities of taste and fashion.".
