Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st Edition. 335pp. Benjamin Butler was one of the most controversial figures of the 19th-century and was once as well known as Abraham Lincoln, his contemporary. A protoliberal political reformer, Butler believed that men and women should not have to work more than ten hours a day, 60 hours a week instead of the 13 hours a day, 78 hours a week before the Civil War. He advanced a law similar to the National Labor Relations Act of 1935 and was an early advocate of the secret ballot. These and other issues led him to be regarded as a dangerous radical. This is a critical, but not carping, biography of a man who, like everybody else, had good points and worthy motives as well as human faults. Bibliography and Index. A very nice copy.
