Hardcover. Condición: Very good. First Edition. 2 vols.: viii, 320; viii, 317 p. 20 cm. Fold-out map at rear of vol. II. Burgundy leather with marbled paper boards. Rubbing in spots gives a whitish tinge. Former owner's label on front pastedowns. Occasional spots and thumbing. Botanist Amelia Matilda Murray (1795 1884) set out on a tour of North America and Cuba where she indulged her interest in botany and investigated the institution of slavery. Upon her return she published these volumes, but her pro-slavery viewpoint made them unpopular and cost her the position of Woman of the Bedchamber to Queen Victoria.
