Clean and bright throughout, with unmarked text, free of inscriptions and stamps; firmly bound. In a fine dust jacket. -- Outlines the Nazi anti-Jewish policies in the Polish Generalgouvernement in 1939-42, focusing on the district of Radom. Dwells on the ghettos established in this area (e.g. in Kielce, Radom, Czestochowa) and the mass deportations of Jews from the region in 1942 (mainly to Treblinka). Relates the Nazi persecution of Poles who helped Jewish fugitives. In December 1942 and January 1943, a company of the German gendarmerie stationed in Ciepielow carried out a mass murder operation in the villages of Ciepielow Stary, Rekowka, Swiesielice, and Zajaczkow aimed at Polish families that had given aid to Jewish fugitives from the ghettos hiding in local forests. During the four operations executed with extreme brutality a total of 38 people, mostly children, were murdered. The youngest victim was only a few months old, the oldest - more than seventy. The punitive action was carried out on the background of the Nazi "pacification" campaign: there were partisan activities in the area (such as the Jewish partisan unit headed by Chil Brawerman and Stanislaw Olczyk "Garbaty" and controlled by the communist Gwardia Ludowa). These executions were probably the largest series of crimes committed in occupied Poland by Nazis against Poles who aided Jews. This book is not only a homage to those who paid the highest price for helping people sentenced to die, but also constitutes an important voice in the difficult discourse on the attitude of Poles towards the Holocaust. -- Contents: A Note from the Publisher; Introduction; Outline of German Anti-Jewish Policies in the General Government 1939-1942 [Nazi Conceptions of the Final Solution of the 'Jewish Question'; The Shaping of Anti-Jewish Policy in the General Government, with a Particular Emphasis on the District of Radom up until the End of 1941; The Course of the Deportation of the Jewish Population to the Death Camp at Treblinka; The Jewish Population in the Face of Deportation; Legal Sanctions for Aiding Jewish Fugitives]; Crimes Against Poles for Aiding Jews in the Region of Ciepielow [Genesis of the Pacification in Ciepielow Stary and the Surrounding Area; Gendarmes from Ciepielow; Crimes Against Poles in Ciepielow Stary: December 6th, 1942; Crimes Against Poles in Rekowka: December 6th, 1942; Crimes Against Poles in Swiesielice: December 8th, 1942; Crimes Against Poles in Zajaczkow:January 11th, 1943; Conclusion; Bibliography.
