Hard Back. Condición: Book Good +. Estado de la sobrecubierta: No Dustjacket. New Edition. 168 + 167 pages including notes. Boards appear to be leather covered, worn at edges & corners, but still decent. Embossed spine, would have once been attractive with gilt and cross binding, but now TATTY with 35mm of covering missing from top and 50mm missing from bottom, titles are clear. Marbled end papers on all sides. Slight foxing to text, otherwise clean and unimpeded. Binding feels strong and spund. A good working copy, or for repair, thus priced down accordingly.

Boards have been heavily rub worn with heavy shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are bumped and a heavily frayed and spine ends are crushed, with some small splits and chips. Tanning to spine and edges. Boards are bowed. Book has a forward lean. Water marks to boards and spine.

Born in London, he was the son of Sir Francis Milman, 1st Baronet, physician to King George III. A successful student, he went on to become Professor of Poetry at Oxford university. He later worked his way up through the ranks of religious order, to become the Dean of St Paul's Cathedral. Milman died in 1868, and is buried at St Paul's Cathedral.Bound in full calf with gilt detailing to the spine and boards, including the half title.Containing the bookplate of Edward Hodge to the front pastedown.Containing the ink signature of a previous owner to the title page. Externally, generally smart. Rubbing to the extremeties, particularly to the joints. A few marks to the front board. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Ink inscription to recto of front blank. Some spotting throughout, heavier to the first and last few pages Very Good. book.

Edges rubbed and corners a little bumped otherwise a good set in uniform bindings. Milman was Professor of Poetry at Oxford and later Dean of St. Paul's Cathedral, London. His dramatic poem The Martyr of Antioch was adapted by Gilbert and Sullivan for a sacred musical drama composed for and introduced at the Leeds Triennial Festival, October 15, 1880.
