Merian which depicts the Siege of Athlone and the battle between the Jacobites & the Williamites in 1691. Super cartographical print with a lot of detail showing the fortressed town surrounded by the Williamites. Undated but circa 1710. Born in BasleThe Swiss engraver Matthew Merian, the son of Matthaus Merian (the older) created graphic documentary art at this time. He was part cartographer, part topographer & part social scientist. He used his art as a kind of visual journalism, to record for posterity the spread of city & country life, & political and other traumas of the time. His images teem with drama like modern day comic strips. He was in England in 1640 and more than likely came ot Ireland in 1641. A superb and rare print.
