Hardcover. Condición: Good. Thick folio (265x380mm); 145 leaves containing approximately 6,000 manuscript prescription slips, tipped to the recto and verso, slips often over-lapping each other, so that both sides are visible if one just flips. Prescriptions from various doctors, some of them dated and/or naming specific patients, many of them numbered sequentially by the pharmacist. Boards and backstrip lacking; outer leaves a bit worn and soiled. Compiled by pharmacist Henry F. Hassebrock (1858-1904), whose office was at the corner of 13th and Washington Streets in St. Louis -- numerous doctors from the surrounding neighborhoods sent thousands of patients to Hassebrock for their medicine. Many presriptions dated, naming doctors and (sometimes) specific patients, many of them numbered sequentially by the pharmacist. It is unclear whether the prescription slips were preserved for legal reasons, reference, of some kind of obsessive-compulsive disorder on the pharmacist's part -- but they offer an interesting look at medical practices of the period. Massive. Unique.
