Starting out as a Futurist Mayakovsky [1893-1930] welcomed the Revolution and became a leading poet and writer of the Soviet era whose avant-garde tendencies saw him clash with the prevailing ethos of Soviet realism. Timothy's Horse was first published as 'The Fire Horse' in 1927. The story of a young boy who wants to be a cavalryman so his father decides to buy him a hobbyhorse and the tale recounts he enlists the help of a number of craftsmen to make the horse. The illustrator Constantini [1926-2013] was influenced by collage as can be seen here where he uses cut-out heads within the body of the illustrations. This UK edition of the title is rare.
