The Editor's note on page iv states: "This first edition is a limited one: later editions of this book will be printed abroad in a manner that should do more justice both to this writer and this material." As regards the wartime production of this rare limited edition, the Editor's note also states that: "The million or so individual letters were picked from type compartments and hand set by Chinese compositors who knew little English. Type--so small unfortunately--was available only for forty pages at a time. There were delays in paper shipments as Japanese planes subjected the Kowloon-Hankow Railway to daily bombings." There were further delays due to difficulties obtaining the services of compositors. The selection in this work is my no means exhaustive, for Madame Chiang's writings are as voluminous as they are varied, but those addresses, interviews, messages and press dispatches included in the first section of this book can be taken as representative. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, she rallied her people against the Japanese invasion; and in 1943 conducted an eight-month speaking tour of the United States of America to gain support. Her life traversed three centuries. Soong Mei-ling met Chiang Kai-shek in 1920. Since he was eleven years her elder, already married, and a Buddhist, Mei-ling's mother vehemently opposed the marriage between the two, but finally agreed after Chiang showed proof of his divorce and promised to convert to Christianity. Chiang told his future mother-in-law that he could not convert immediately, because religion needed to be gradually absorbed, not swallowed like a pill. They married in Shanghai on December 1, 1927. While biographers regard the marriage with varying appraisals of partnership, love, politics and competition, it lasted 48 years. The couple had no children. In 1928, she was made a member of the Committee of Yuans by Chiang. They renewed their wedding vows on May 24, 1944 at St. Bartholomew's Church in New York City. Madame Chiang initiated the New Life Movement and became actively engaged in Chinese politics. She was a member of the Legislative Yuan from 1930 to 1932 and Secretary-General of the Chinese Aeronautical Affairs Commission from 1936 to 1938. In 1945 she became a member of the Central Executive Committee of the Kuomintang. As her husband rose to become Generalissimo and leader of the Kuomintang, Madame Chiang acted as his English translator, secretary and advisor. She was his muse, his eyes, his ears, and his most loyal champion. During World War II, Madame Chiang tried to promote the Chinese cause and build a legacy for her husband on a par with Roosevelt, Churchill and Stalin. Well-versed in both Chinese and Western culture, she became popular both in China and abroad. Her prominence led Joseph Stilwell to quip that she ought to be appointed minister of defense. Soong Mei-ling made several tours to the United States to lobby support for the Nationalists' war effort. She drew crowds as large as 30,000 people and in 1943 made the cover of TIME magazine for a third time. She had earlier appeared on the October 26, 1931 cover alongside her husband and on the January 3, 1937 cover with her husband as "Man and Wife of the Year." Arguably showing the impact of her visits, in 1943, the United States Women's Army Corps recruited a unit of Chinese-American women to serve with the Army Air Forces as "Air WACs", referred to as the "Madame Chiang Kai-Shek Air WAC unit". Both Soong Mei-ling and her husband were on good terms with Time magazine senior editor and co-founder Henry Luce, who frequently tried to rally money and support from the American public for the Republic of China. On February 18, 1943, she became the first Chinese national and the second woman to address both houses of the US Congress. After the defeat of her husband's government in the Chinese Civil War in 1949, Madame Chiang followed her husband to Taiwan, while her sister Soong Ching-ling stayed in mainland China, siding with the communists. Madame Chiang continued to play a prominent international role. She was a Patron of the International Red Cross Committee, honorary chair of the British United Aid to China Fund, and First Honorary Member of the Bill of Rights Commemorative Society.

An editor's note states that the Chinese compositors could only set forty pages of text at a time due to a lack of individual type. Other delays to the printing were caused by delays in receiving paper shipments caused by daily bombings of the railways. After her husband's death in 1975 Madame Chiang Kai-shek emigrated from Taiwan to New York where she died aged 106 in 2003. 8vo.

4to. 1 p. On "Headquarters of the Generalissimo" letterhead. Madame Chiang Kai-shek wrote from Nanjing, then the Chinese capital, less than two months before the Nanjing Massacre, in which invading Japanese forces slaughtered Chinese civilians. The massacre was part of the Second Sino-Japanese War the "undeclared war" mentioned in the letter in which Japanese Imperial forces invaded China. The Second Sino-Japanese War is considered to have opened the Pacific Theatre of World War Two. President and Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek had mobilized his best troops to defend Shanghai earlier that year and lost. Reluctant to wipe out the rest of his army in a hopeless defense of Nanjing, he withdrew most of his troops before the invasion: "Dear Mr. Yui, I think you are already acquainted with Mr. Kerran, of London, so it is not necessary for me to introduce him to you. Mr. Kerran is very interested in China s case in this undeclared war, and is anxious to get some close up ideas of the endurance of our soldiers in their defense against Japanese invasion. Therefore will you kindly show Mr. Kerran what courtesy you can in assisting him to pay a visit to the front so that he can see with his own eyes what is happening? Whatever you can do for Mr. Kerran will be appreciated. Yours sincerely, Mayling Soong Chiang (Madame Chiang Kai-shek)". The terrific content letter is in good very condition with toning and a mounting strip at the top.
