Circa 1870, 245 x 175 mm, 9¾ x 7 inches, yellow card covers illustrated and lettered red and black, upper cover shows the parents and children. 8 half page HAND COLOURED engravings, prose text beneath, printed 1 side only. Large vertical closed tear to lower cover repaired with archival tape showing on final illustration, lower corner torn off lower cover next to spine, 60 mm wide by 30 mm maximum, (2½" x 1¼") with loss of about 5 words in last 2 lines of text beneath image (see image 4). Stitching slightly slack, occasional light soiling to margins. A good copy only. No.20 in a list of 63 Aunt Mavor's Toy Books on lower cover. Dated from imprint circa 1855, 235 x 165 mm, 9¼ x 6½ inches, cream card covers with illustration of Aunt Mavor showing 5 children a list of fairytale titles, adverts to lower cover. 8 very good large HAND COLOURED illustrations, just over half page, small print prose text beneath, printed 1 side only. The first illustration: 7 little boys sitting on each others' shoulders so the smallest can reach the knocker on a large door. Spine expertly repaired from inside, restitched, a few pale small stains on covers, page 1 trimmed close at lower edge with partial loss of last line, still legible, last line trimmed off 2 other pages by original binder but restored neatly by him with no loss of printed text. Occasional small pencil mark to text. A very good copy, no inscriptions. Not in Osborne, Gumuchian or Oppenheimer, 1 copy on WorldCat. The lower cover lists the titles of the first 2 series, ours being No. 11 in a list of 13. Osborne Volume II page 602 is a later colour printed edition published by Routledge, Warne and Routledge in 1860 in a different series engraved by Edmund Evans. Soft cover. Condición: Good. 4to. Size: 9.5 x 6.5 inches (245 x 175mm) Not dated but circa 1869. Not paginated. 12pp. Each page is printed on one side only with text and one half page hand coloured wood engraved illustration per page. The paper is laid onto linen hence 'Everlasting'. There is a former owners name on the front cover 'Katherine Parker a present from Uncle John Nov 18th 1861'. The cover is a little worn, a little grubby and corners lightly frayed, inside there is the odd mark and thumbing, but nothing major. A good copy. George Routledge & Sons used this publishing title circa 1870 onwards, prior to that George Routledge & Co. 1852-1858 and Routledge, Warne & Routledge circa 1860. This title was printed earlier as part of a collection of stories such as Aunt Mavor and My Mothers Picture Book circa 1858.

Illustrated with eight pages, each page printed on one side only with a large half page woodcut signed 'E.Evans sc', possibly by Edmund Evans who later did wood engravings for books illustrated by Kate Greenaway & E.V.Boyle. Each woodcut is hand coloured showing dogs doing human activities in human dress. The wrappers are now worn especially along the lower spine but holding and just a little frayed. Inside the text is clean and fresh. A very good copy. George Routledge & Sons used this publishing title circa 1870 onwards, prior to that George Routledge & Co. This title was printed earlier as part of a collection of stories such as Aunt Mavor and My Mothers Picture Book .

Not dated but Jisc suggest that this series was issued circa 1851-1855 and the series was illustrated by Alfred Henry Forrosters. 4to. Bound in original pictorial paper wrappers with adverts on back cover as usual, advertising other Toy Books published by George Routledge and Co. Farringdon Street. Six pages printed on one side only each illustrated with hand coloured wood engravings as issued. The front and back being stuck onto the front and back covers as issued. The cover has been professionally strengthened, some marginal tears repaired and the pages resewn. Complete. Like most of these paper back children s books, scarce. Only one copy listed on Jisc. Goldilocks is called Silver Locks in this early version of the Three Bears Size 10 x 7 inches (25 x175mm)It original appeared in print in Volume Four of The Doctor , 1837, by Robert Southey. The first illustrated version of The Three Bears story with text by George Nicol appeared that Christmas in 1841, Although traditional versions make the story s porridge thief a fox, both Mure s and Southey s tales make their thief a heroine, a disagreeable old woman. By 1850, the intruder appears for the first time as a little girl named Silver Hair ; and in 1868, Golden hair . The first use of the name Goldilocks , which is now universally attached to the story occurs in Old Nursery Stories and Rhymes , published 1904.
