First edition. Hardcovers. Two volumes with a total of 721 pages. Translated from the French by Jean Stewart. Aragon was perhaps best known as a poet but his writing here makes this one of the best books on Matisse. The combined illustrations between the two volumes is 541 of which 155 are in color. Both volumes are in near fine condition with Vol 1 having a small spot the bottom edge of the front board and a small spot to the foredge. Both dust jackets have some edge wear and small tears to the spine ends and corners. In a very good red cloth slipcase that has some minor wear. A clean set. Please note that this is heavy and oversized set that will likely require extra shipping charges.

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. 4° - Two volumes 358+374pp - Color & B/w illustrations, some reproduced on folded tables. First Italian edition in the translation of Augusto Donaudy, printed in France as the original by Gallimard, released in Paris in the same year, created under the direction of the Author. It is a special book, a literary work with a very long gestation, started in the 40s when Aragon (1897-1982) met Matisse (1869-1954). It is a novel where the life of Aragon is intertwined with that of the protagonist, it is an art book because it participates in the art of Matisse, it is an anthology of texts written over the years, with literary and historical notes and references. Original binding, original dust-jacket and original slipcase. In Fine condition.

2 volumes. First edition in English. With 155 color illustrations and a vast profusion of black and white illustrations throughout, several folding, over 500 in all. 4to, original white cloth, lettered in orange on the spines and upper covers, in the publisher's colour decorated dustjackets and red cloth slipcase. [vi], 356; [iv], 366 pp. A very fine set, the books essentially pristine, the dustjackets likewise but for a touch of minor rubbing to the tips, the publisher's slipcase also very fine. SCARCE FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, THE FINE AMERICAN ISSUE PRINTED IN FRANCE. A huge, fascinating look at Matisse and his creative process by Aragon, one of France's foremost poets, covering the twenty-seven years of their acquaintance. Profusely illustrated with photographs of the artist and his models, paintings, and drawings these 2 thick volumes are both a visual and literary treat. "It took Aragon close to twenty-seven years to put this book together. He assembled here all that he had ever written on Matisse, adding to it, elaborating on it, providing his glosses, letting memory do its creative work, shaping his material into what it pleases him to call a novel , and allowing himself numerous digressions. In spite of his elliptical ways, however, the subject Matisse is overwhelmingly present, most obviously through the illustrations, carefully keyed into the text following Aragon s layout instructions and admirably illuminating it, but no less through Matisse s own words which Aragon records with scrupulous fidelity. What he has arrived at is a dialogue between writer and painter unique in writings on artists and art and uniquely revealing of the creative process.".
