This volume of NZ's extensive official World War Two histories concentrates of the experiences of POW's from the three services captured by the German, Italian or Japanese forces in the various theatres of conflict. The army units suffered their heaviest POW losses in the period from April 1941 to August 1942 in the Greece, Crete and Western Desert campaigns, while NZers serving with the RAF and RNZAF were captured when their aircraft were shot down or crashed, perticularly in the bomber offensive over Europe. Many peripheral issues relating to prisoners, including alian detainees, enemy combatants, are given recognition in this comprehensive study of those who became POWs. First edition of 1954, 546 pages including index, six colour tone fold out maps plus one statistical chart, 71 b/w illustrations, mainly photos wirth some drawings, cartoons etc Green hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG with sight wear spine extremites and corners, few small white spots to rear board, ink inscription top FFEP, text block otherwise excellent. Unpacked weight just over 1.2kgs, would require additional postage for off-shore delivery.

Of these, 1270 soldiers were wounded when captured, of whom 107 died in captivity. a further 416 soldiers died from sickness, accident, and other causes. The great majority of the soldier prisoners were captured in the disasters of the first three years, left on the beaches in Greece or Crete or were members of units overrun by German tanks. The airmen were those who survived after being shot down over enemy territory. Their record as prisoners is a magnificent one, an honourable chapter in New Zealand history, carefully and thoroughly related in this volume.
