Libro
Hardcover. Condición: Good. Hardcover. Bound in full, brown, leather with gold bands on the spine, red leather title label. Covers have blind ruled borders. Large coat of arms stamped in gold on front and back. Pencil note inside the book says it's and 'Austrian Royal Binding,' but it doesn't seem to be. Another set of notes with the book (tucked inside) identifies the coat of arms as the Republic of the Seven United Provinces of the Netherlands, or Arms of the Dutch Republic. This seems more accurate, but still not exact. Coat of arms shows two crowned lions astride a shield with large crown on it. Emblem on the shield is another crowned shield with lion on the right and cross/orb on the left. One of the large lions has a sword and the other a flowering staff of some sort. Both lions have their tongues sticking out. There is a sheaf of grain or bundled grass beneath them. This is very nearly the coat of arms of the Dutch Republic, but the cross/orb shouldn't be there. The book was published around the time of the end of the Dutch Republic and the short era of the Batavian Republic, before the founding of modern Netherlands, but binding is not dated, so it's not clear exactly when and where it is from. Marbled endpapers. Binding tight. Pages clean. Pages edges gilt. 322 and 367 pages, each with its own title page. Text is in Latin. Please email with questions or to request photos.
