Hardcover. Condición: Very Good+. Marbled paper over boards, red leather backstrip; 4to (about 7.5-by-9.5 inches); approx. pp. 119 (numbered by hand), with articles and images from numerous sources neatly mounted to the recto and verso. Boards scuffed; spine chipped and torn at tips, with gatherings exposed. Contains hundreds of articles on -- and portraits of -- authors, composers, heads of church and state, royalty, and more. This was, at some point, a ledger or journal, as patches of handwriting (numbers and letters) are sometimes visible between the articles or going to the very edge of the page. Our compiler focuses mostly on the arts, though his/her collection of articles does enjoy the occasional notice of the end of a family line ("The Last of the Carlyles") or item of broad social interest (the first female sailor in France). It features Arthur Conan Doyle, Henry Irving, H. R. H. the Prince of Wales, the King and Queen of Siam, the Bishop of Winchester, Lady Clifford, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and many more -- a spectrum of who's who, with an emphasis on the bookish. A bit stuffy, but also a bit curious -- perhaps the work of a student, an avid reader, or (maybe, just maybe) a social climber? Nice and full, almost no negative space.

Cloth-backed paper over boards, hand-painted decorative endpapers; 6.25" x 9.25"; pp. [6] (frontis., title-p., t.o.c.), 39, [6] ("appendix," see below); all grey heavy cardstock leaves, neatly handwritten in black ink, with numerous full-color tipped-on illustrations. Introduces Italian painters, German painters, Spanish, Flemish, Belgian, English, French, and American painters, with brief biographies of each artist and a reproduction of one or two of his/her prototypical work(s). All of the reproductions seem to have come from one source, as all utilize the same printing method (lithographs), and are similarly sized. Includes an "appendix" chart, listing more than 100 painters, their years of birth and death, country of birth, school (Hudson River, Naturalist, Impressionist, etc.), whether they painted portraits or figures or landscapes (or any combination of the three), the title of at least on of at least one representative painting, and where it can be seen. A careful, thorough volume, and painstakingly tidy -- perhaps a class project or even a teaching tool.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good+. Decorative cloth over boards, printed paper label mounted to upper board; 12.5-by-12.5 inches; approx. pp. 200, with full-color illustrations -- reproductions of drawings and paintings -- cut from unidentified (though, likely, numerous) sources, and neatly affixed to every page. There is plenty of art deco, though the illustrations vary in style, with a focus on fashion, architecture, interiors, and potraits. It seems that our editor was concerned primarily with what's pretty, and she succeeds. An excellent breaker or display copy, offering a nice look at the costumes, fashions, and trends of the period. Binding shaken; cloth a bit frayed at tips.

Condición: Very Good+. Cloth-covered boards, 12 x 10.5 inches; contains 30 grey heavy cardstock leaves. Nicely preserves silver-gelatin photographs (in sepia and b/w, average size is 2 x 4 inches), passenger lists, postcards, telegrams, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, a few manuscript entries, and more, tipped-onto the rectos and versos of every leaf, or laid-in at rear. Boards a bit scuffed, with a scattering of tiny bleached spots. Binding a bit shaken, as expected, as the volume is near-to bursting with keepsakes and treasures. Photographs of landmarks, landscapes, streetscapes, and some wonderful images of the clothing, interior design, and cars of the period. Postcards (mostly b/w, with a few colored) include but are not limited to Stonehenge, Tunbridge Wells, Warwick Castle, Shakespeare s Birthplace, Anne Hathaway s cottage (and lovely garden), Raglan Castle, Gloucester Cathedral, Blarney Castle, a portrait of Lenin, a portrait of Stalin, The Paramount Hotel of New York City. Here and there throughout, this travelogue includes quite a few interesting pamphlets. All of them are clean and legible, though adhered to the scrapbook by their rear covers (and, as such, not removable without causing damage). They are: A guide to The Duke of Cornwall Hotel, Plymouth; The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ; Canterbury: A Handbook for Pilgrims; Guide to the High Rocks One Mile from Royal Tunbridge Wells; A Short Guide to Battle Abbey; A Catalogue of an Exhibition of Original Paintings and Drawings Made to Illustrate Books Published at the Bodley Head, (New Burlington Galleries, 1930); A guide to Compton Wynyates History of Blarney Castle; A Guide to Glebe Hotel, Lakes of Killarney, Ireland; Kate, by Mary McCartie (staple-bound illustrated wraps, printed by The Veritas Company, Dublin); The University Collection of Antiquities Short Guide-Books, I. The Oseberg-Ship and The Oseberg-Room, Oslo: A. W. Broggers, 1930; Authorised Guide to the Tower of London. The final leaf introduces a new cruise, aboard the S. S. George Washington to Hamburg, Southampton and Cherbourg, and Cobh (Queenstown), with a passenger list, menu, and one tiny photograph of the Statue of Liberty. Though no details of this journey are provided, one legend is recorded in manuscript: A one-page telling of "The Seven Sluggards in the Courtyard of the Paula Becher Modersohn House in Boettcherstrasse," in which seven brothers dig a spring because they re too lazy to fetch water from the well, build a dyke around their house because they re too lazy to fend off flood, pave a road because they d rather not dig their wagon out of the mud in general, perform any number of laborious feats so that they can enjoy their laziness in comfort. Some rather brittle newspapers, a love letter (in which a very particular engagement ring is demanded), a few stray postcards and photographs, and manuscript (see below) are laid-in at the rear. Manuscript: 5 folded leaves, comprising 17 pages. Hastily records a series of charms, spells, superstitions, and omens undated, not offering a location. "If you see leaves and dust suddenly rise in a little whorl wind, bless yourself and leave, there is a passage there (i e) the fairies are going by ".

Paper-coverd boards, oblong 8vo (8.75 x 7 inches); pp [40], rich with all sorts of ephemera -- newspaper clippings, photographs, invitations, dance cards, and more. Scrapbook compiled by Ms. Josie Powers of 124 Jay Street, Butte, Montana; Vice-President of the Junior class at Butte Central High School, Captain of the Girls' Basketball Team. Opens with a pencil sketch on the front-pastedown, showing a young woman in a stylish floral dress and high heels, holding a young man in a dip and laying a big ol' kiss on him. The caption tells us that this is "Josie in native scenery," and the rest of the scrapbook maintains that spirit of youth and fun -- bold and, it seems, into everything. Includes clippings from the high school newspaper, handwritten notes from her friends, prom invitations, and a bit of class warfare ("Fog horns are not the only things that blow, so do some Seniors"). Each page is completely full, nicely showcasing jokes, poems, and prayers in many hands, as well as the occasional sketch. Photographs nicely capture the hair and clothing styles of the period. Ms. Powers also saved a variety of little artifacts, from a wooden ice cream spoon, to a lock of hair, to fabrics, ticket stubs, honor roll lists, a glass tile, and church programs. A quirky, energetic amalgam.

Black cloth-covered boards, bound with thick black thread, "Scrap Book" stamped in gilt on upper board. Contains hundreds of pages with tipped-on images of women in various states of undress, plus an additional folder full of loose pages clipped from magazines and newspapers. This bizarre collection was purportedly "found in a wall when an old house was torn down." Perhaps the secret collection of a fetishist -- or (to be kind) the collection of art student -- it offers hundreds of images of the female form, either in parts (occasionally creepy, as a few ladies are cut off at the waist, with the top thrown away) or whole, and only occasionally clothed. Best summed up by a Ty Mahon cartoon included in the folder, which shows a crowd of women in bras and panties, surrounding a lone man who is saying, "Come, come, girls! You'll have to show me more than that!" More, indeed -- this volume is nearly bursting with glamourous portraits of Hollywood celebrities, as well as ads for hosiery, bras, girdles (in abundance), panties, and shoes. Vast vistas of legs. A good deal of derrieres.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good+. Published by Thomas Y. Crowell and Company in 1907, with a verse for every day facing a blank page for personal contributions, and including a frontispiece portrait of Tennyson. Green cloth, stamped in gilt on upper board and spine; approx. pp. 200, printed verse, with facing pages full of handwritten entries and original photographs and artwork by numerous contributors, as well as tipped-in illustrations and ephemera. Boards scuffed; spine sunned; binding shaken, likely due to the copious tipped-in material, and from being passed amongst so many contributors. (This was clearly a much-loved volume.) Our compiler is presumably Miss Elvira Reina, whose name appears on the front paste-down, alongside a small Valentine card, reading "This may not go down in history" on the front cover. Miss Reina would likely be surprised to find that her book is still of interest nearly 100 years later, but the wealth of original material makes it a little gem. Rich with photographs (usually small, about 3-by-5 inches or less, in b/w and sepia, a few with hand-colored details), offering a wonderful look at the fashions of the period, and including an image of a car (with 4 Gatsby-esque gents in it) and an image of a young woman in a kitchen. The volume maintains a youthful lightness, as most of the photographs feature young men, young women, and children, and many of the contributions come from Miss Reina's sisters, Adeline and Ada Agnes, who include witty ditties about fashion. The portrait of Miss Reina's mother and the volume's dedication to her lend some temperance, with floral motifs cut from unknown sources and tipped in as decorations for poems about love, family, friendship, remembrance; two full-color illustrations of a young Native American woman (also from an unknown source); an embroidered image of flags and the motto "Victoire Paix," likely hand-made; signed small photographic portraits. A little more than half the text bears some unique contribution, with blank pages scattered through about three months of spring, and nothing in November and December. Sold with a collection of 10 loose photographs, sepia and b/w silver gelatin prints, average size of 8-by-10 inches, all formal portraits of a young woman (it seems that the same 3 faces repeat, all are brunettes, perhaps they are the Reina sisters). All are wonderful examples of the style of the period -- very little jewelry is on display, but dark lipstick and bob haircuts are prominent, as are formal clothes for day and night -- and including one image of a lady in menswear.

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Half mottled cloth and leather boards; 10 x 13 inches; approximately 200 pages, nearly bursting with photographs and ephemera relating to student life at turn-of-the-century Yale. Compiled by a Mr. Jay Morse Pickands (1890-1913), whose family was prominent in the industrial and commercial life of Cleveland, Ohio. (His father, Col. James Pickands, co-founded Pickands, Mather, and Co., Iron Ore, Pig Iron, and Coal.) While at Yale, Jay Pickands was affiliated with Alpha Delta Phi fraternity, and seemed an active participant in many sporting events, theater events, and possibly a secret society (Scroll and Key). This unique tome manages to amass the commonplace and the surprising though significantly more of the latter. It begins with all the trappings of Freshman life (a student handbook, list of rules, course offerings, exam schedules, school songs, telegrams, bills, invitations to debates), then quickly gives way to sports (football, swimming, baseball and we know that young Mr. Pickands reserved two seats to the Ladies Bicycle Race), social clubs (and their politics), a fair amount of hedonism (present as a preserved wine cork, bottle cap, and cigar butt), and The Theater. Collects numerous menus, ticket stubs, announcements, and play programs from Alpha Delta Phi and H. Boyah, as well as a number of newspaper clippings relevant to Yale sports and social events. Interestingly, a number of these newspaper clippings address the abolishment of Sophomore Societies, including one about a poor student being blackballed (supposedly as a display of that society s power), and another about two prominent students who refused to join Skull and Bones. Along with this batch of newspaper clippings are four issues of "The Horoscope," concerned wholly with Yale s Secret Societies. Another major presence in Pickand s scrapbook is that of the theater, with announcements and invitations from the Glee and Banjo Club, and, more prominently, The H. Boyah Minstrels, present not just as ticket stubs and announcements, but as full programs and b/w photographs, both individual and group portraits, showing the entire troupe gathered together in drag, black face, or a combination thereof. Pickands provides very little text or explanation for the items he s collected, though the personal does weave its way into this "narrative" of Yale: Pickands brother s wedding announcement is amongst the newspaper clippings, as is a short article recording the sighting of "the first horseless rig in Negaunee," which belonged to Harry Pickands. (And it should be noted that Negaunee did have one other technically horseless rig, which was powered by mule.) There is a lock of baby hair. There are pictures of the family dog. He includes a few hastily scrawled notes from his roommate, asking "Dear Pick" to please wake him up if he sleeps too long. And, finally, amongst Pickands calling cards and dance cards, you will find the name of Alice Reynolds, who would become his wife. A rich volume. Lacking backstrip; boards a bit soiled; a little waviness from what might've once been dampstain.

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Full leather (7-by-9 inches), all edges gilt, in hand-made cloth cover with calligraphic initials and floral motif embroidered on front cover; approx. pp. 200, different color papers, more than half full with autographs, prose, poems, and original artwork by numerous contributors. Cloth cover sunned along spine and edges, otherwise fine. A lovely volume. By turns funny and touching, this album compiled by Miss Elsie Nora Turner (who becomes a Mrs. along the way) includes original pen and ink drawings, watercolors, gouache, two sepia photographs (one including a very early image of a car), and 6 pages of autographs (including one with the heading, "My Wedding Day / June 9, 1909." that is signed by her 4 bridesmaids). The artwork, contributed by friends and family, is invariably adept, ranging from the formal landscape, still life, or portrait, to cartoons (a cat caught in a goldfish bowl, a flamingo at battle with a frog, a man with wings abuzz in a field of lady flowers) -- it is sometimes direct on the page, other times tipped into corner slots (and so removable). A drawing of a bridge blown up by the Boers in 1900 is amongst the artwork. Some contribute poetry, including one in defense of women, and another quotes Longfellow's "Hiawatha." The numerous autographs she collects locate most of her friends and family spread throughout England. Interestingly, we know that Miss Turner was married in 1909. There are no entries dated later than 1909, but there is a "Baby's Catechism" clipped from a newspaper and laid-in. Perhaps, by that time, the Mrs. no longer had the time necessary to compile, document, and contribute to such a careful, spirited volume.

After which, book includes typed poems by William Blake, William Shakespeare, Walter de la Mare, Carl Sandburg; and other original works by the poet are clipped and pasted-in. Plus a few watercolors, aquatints, engraved views fo Vienna, color lithographs of the Crimea, and more. Leaves a bit brittle, with a few detached and neatly laid in; but all images are neatly mounted in the album via slotted corners, and so easy to remove. A nice, bright collection overall, with some light marginal soiling, and just a plate or two a bit foxed or oxidized.
