Hardcover. Condición: Very Good+. Full morocco, lavishly stamped in gilt on upper board and spine, ornate pattern repeated in blind on rear board; oblong, approx. 7.75 x 5 inches; approx. pp. 150, autographed friendship album, handwritten throughout by numerous hands. Boards lightly scuffed; front hinge cracked; FFEP neatly removed. A rich collection of quotes and signatures, offering numerous inks and callgraphic specimens, centered around Cornell College, Mount Vernon, Iowa, but including Bellevue, Cedar Falls, Marion -- and more -- with contributors hailing from a few distant towns, like Chicago and New Orleans. Entries are contributed from 1873-79, with the majority from 1875, a few addressed to "Mollie," but most addressed to "Mary," (Mary B. Woods) who seems to have cut a popular figure, as nearly every recto bears a contribution, and quite a few versos as well. Remarkably varied penmanship throughout (two in Pitman shorthand), all of it legible (even lovely), contributed by over a hundred men and women, offering pleasant thoughts and good wishes to their friend ("Long may you live / Happy may you be / Marry a good fellow / And live next door to me"), but not afraid to show their dark side ("Life is a waste of wearisome hours / Which seldom the rose of enjoyment adorns / And the heart that is soonest awake to the flowers / Is always the first to be touched by the thorns").

Hardcover. Condición: Very Good+. Marbled paper over boards, red leather backstrip; 4to (about 7.5-by-9.5 inches); approx. pp. 119 (numbered by hand), with articles and images from numerous sources neatly mounted to the recto and verso. Boards scuffed; spine chipped and torn at tips, with gatherings exposed. Contains hundreds of articles on -- and portraits of -- authors, composers, heads of church and state, royalty, and more. This was, at some point, a ledger or journal, as patches of handwriting (numbers and letters) are sometimes visible between the articles or going to the very edge of the page. Our compiler focuses mostly on the arts, though his/her collection of articles does enjoy the occasional notice of the end of a family line ("The Last of the Carlyles") or item of broad social interest (the first female sailor in France). It features Arthur Conan Doyle, Henry Irving, H. R. H. the Prince of Wales, the King and Queen of Siam, the Bishop of Winchester, Lady Clifford, Oliver Wendell Holmes, and many more -- a spectrum of who's who, with an emphasis on the bookish. A bit stuffy, but also a bit curious -- perhaps the work of a student, an avid reader, or (maybe, just maybe) a social climber? Nice and full, almost no negative space.

Navy wraps (sheep), with gilt-stamped lettering on front cover, a. e. g, with inside gilt dentelles and decorative endpapers.; in hand-made embroidered cloth jacket; 7" x 9"; approx. pp. 120, mostly heavy cardstock leaves, rich with numerous drawings in ink, watercolor paintings, poems and prose -- all entirely by hand, from numerous contributors. Hinges cracked, with text block detached and loose in the binding. Jacket a little worn, with a few small spots of staining here and there. Pages are clean and lovely. Stationer's ticket on rear paste-down, indicating William Lyon of Glasgow. An inscription reveals that this volume was a gift "To Rose, from Mrs. A. Y. Mackay, Xmas 1899," and it seems that Rose lovingly circulated it for years thereafter. Contains a wealth of skilled watercolors (landscapes and figures) contributed by numerous artists (including another Mackay), cute pen and ink cartoons (by some wonderfully adept illustrators), poems and prose copied out by many hands (often decorated), a musical piece, and more. Nearly every page is full.

Ephemera. Condición: Very Good+. Text block only, comprised of different color leaves, edged in gilt; approx. pp. 150, with handwritten poems and prose, plus original artwork, from numerous contributors, scattered throughout. Includes 20 pieces of poetry or prose (Edmund Burke, Matthew Arnold, George Eliot, et al), and 18 pieces of original art, primarily ink and gouache, with some pencil sketches thrown in for good measure. The artwork is nicely accomplished, and ranges from a comic gouache of robed intellectuals, to a sweet ink sketch of bonneted girls sharing a secret, to some lovely landscapes. A few contributors locate themselves in Bedford and Halifax. A nice breaker -- many of the pieces collected here are suitable for display. Also includes laid-in scraps of poetry and prose, and a sketch.

Condición: Very Good+. Cloth-covered boards, 12 x 10.5 inches; contains 30 grey heavy cardstock leaves. Nicely preserves silver-gelatin photographs (in sepia and b/w, average size is 2 x 4 inches), passenger lists, postcards, telegrams, newspaper clippings, pamphlets, a few manuscript entries, and more, tipped-onto the rectos and versos of every leaf, or laid-in at rear. Boards a bit scuffed, with a scattering of tiny bleached spots. Binding a bit shaken, as expected, as the volume is near-to bursting with keepsakes and treasures. Photographs of landmarks, landscapes, streetscapes, and some wonderful images of the clothing, interior design, and cars of the period. Postcards (mostly b/w, with a few colored) include but are not limited to Stonehenge, Tunbridge Wells, Warwick Castle, Shakespeare s Birthplace, Anne Hathaway s cottage (and lovely garden), Raglan Castle, Gloucester Cathedral, Blarney Castle, a portrait of Lenin, a portrait of Stalin, The Paramount Hotel of New York City. Here and there throughout, this travelogue includes quite a few interesting pamphlets. All of them are clean and legible, though adhered to the scrapbook by their rear covers (and, as such, not removable without causing damage). They are: A guide to The Duke of Cornwall Hotel, Plymouth; The Cathedral and Metropolitical Church of Christ; Canterbury: A Handbook for Pilgrims; Guide to the High Rocks One Mile from Royal Tunbridge Wells; A Short Guide to Battle Abbey; A Catalogue of an Exhibition of Original Paintings and Drawings Made to Illustrate Books Published at the Bodley Head, (New Burlington Galleries, 1930); A guide to Compton Wynyates History of Blarney Castle; A Guide to Glebe Hotel, Lakes of Killarney, Ireland; Kate, by Mary McCartie (staple-bound illustrated wraps, printed by The Veritas Company, Dublin); The University Collection of Antiquities Short Guide-Books, I. The Oseberg-Ship and The Oseberg-Room, Oslo: A. W. Broggers, 1930; Authorised Guide to the Tower of London. The final leaf introduces a new cruise, aboard the S. S. George Washington to Hamburg, Southampton and Cherbourg, and Cobh (Queenstown), with a passenger list, menu, and one tiny photograph of the Statue of Liberty. Though no details of this journey are provided, one legend is recorded in manuscript: A one-page telling of "The Seven Sluggards in the Courtyard of the Paula Becher Modersohn House in Boettcherstrasse," in which seven brothers dig a spring because they re too lazy to fetch water from the well, build a dyke around their house because they re too lazy to fend off flood, pave a road because they d rather not dig their wagon out of the mud in general, perform any number of laborious feats so that they can enjoy their laziness in comfort. Some rather brittle newspapers, a love letter (in which a very particular engagement ring is demanded), a few stray postcards and photographs, and manuscript (see below) are laid-in at the rear. Manuscript: 5 folded leaves, comprising 17 pages. Hastily records a series of charms, spells, superstitions, and omens undated, not offering a location. "If you see leaves and dust suddenly rise in a little whorl wind, bless yourself and leave, there is a passage there (i e) the fairies are going by ".

Paperback. Condición: Good. Wraps; 8vo; with 16 tintypes mounted to the first 9 leaves (2 tintypes per page) and labelled by hand. Tintypes are 2.5-by-3.5 inches. Covers detached, with rear cover missing; first leaf detached. Tintypes are cleverly mounted between two leaves, with cut-out frame on the first leaf so the image can show through; handwritten text in the (wide) margins. One page lists Northampton, Massachusetts, another Mountain Park -- so perhaps with some relation to Smith College. Names recorded are Mabel Howard, Anna Bradley, Helen Denison, Helen Foster, Lucia Wheeler, and Mrs. Calander, amongst others. In one photo, the women are looking at a newspaper, and in another, they are holding advertising signs for Honeydew Kisses. The book itself is in fair shape -- some of the pages and "frames" are torn, so, in most cases, the tintypes -- which are in excellent condition -- are easily removable. A few tintypes just a little rubbed or scratched.

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Cloth, "The Windsor Album, Contributions Poetic, Dramatic, Literary & c." stamped in black and gilt on front board; about 8-by-10.5 inches; approx. pp. 80, full with handwritten poems (some original, some copied from Tennyson, Pope, Sewell, and more), a few drawings, 8 full-color paintings (mostly botanical), 4 sepia albumen prints (one a folding panoramic landscape, showing sailboats at harbor beneath a cliff), an acrostic, a hand-drawn map entitled "How We Were Scattered from College," and a few brochures from the school. A handsome volume, boards just a little rubbed, one leaf with a long closed tear at fore-edge. Names include Ida Pears, John Stocks of Chidswell, John Broughton, George William Smelt, W. F. Osborne, E. A. Walker, and more.

  • Oblong 4to. 11.5 x 7.5 in. [48 pp (unpaginated)], on thick card stock, 14 sepia-tinted albumen images tipped-in, all images w/ manuscript notations below, and extensive manuscript text on versos of almost every leaf with photo images, and a few at the end without. Contemporary half-calf binding, rounded corners, gilt lettering on front cover (rebacked, edgewear, rubbing, occasional toning & scuffing to card stock leaves), still G exemplar. This remarkable photo album provides wonderful images and extensive manuscript notes recording the changes in fortune of the Merwin family from a 17th-century farm house at Merwin's Point, CT, to the grand Victorian family home in Milwaukee, WI in the late 19th century. The first photo shows the farm house at Merwin's Point built in 1645 by Miles Merwin (1623-1697), a tanner, farmer, and one of the early founders of Milford, and later Windsor, CT, which has since been torn down by development in the 19th century. The succeeding images show the rocks at Merwin's Point; the second Miles Merwin home with tannery in back on the Bay; rear view of tannery across the harbor; the 29-foot tower of the Memorial Bridge across the Wepawaug River built in 1889; as well as the historic Colonial home built in 1790 by David Merwin (1716-1792), grandson of Miles, who fought as a Minute Man in the opening year of the American Revolution, and which remained in the Merwin family in succeeding generations; as well as photo of the historic First Church of Christ in Milford's third meeting house designed by David Hoadley and built in 1824, still in use today. Of particular interest are the series of six albumen photographs showing exterior and interior views of the Victorian home at 209 Mason Street built by Alma (Anna) Marie Merwin Joys (1838-1923) and her husband Andrew M. Joys (1835-1919), owner of the G.D. Norris & Company, ship chandlers, and secretary and treasurer of the Milwaukee Shipyard Company, and ship owner. The interior images show a beautifully appointed home with the heavily carved front hall bannister & stairway, front parlor with giant mirror and beautiful stained glass windows, with furnishings, views into the dining room, and furnished bedroom. The manuscript notes extend through most of the album beginning on the versos of the mounted photographs, and continuing through the blank leaves at the rear of the album, offering detailed historical notes of the Merwin family, Milford Connecticut, the family descendants, and history and genealogy of the Joys family as well in Milwaukee, WI, and later in Portland, OR. Condición: Very Good. India, late-1800s to early-1900s, Writing Album. Manuscript poems, prayers, and meditations. Full brown morocco over flexible boards (8.25" x 10.25") with "Writing Album" stamped in gilt on upper board, all edges gilt; approx. pp. 150, with decorative endpapers and alternating paper colors (some white, blue, grey), nearly all of which contain handwritten entries, from numerous contributors. In English. Boards lightly scuffed along the edges; gilt a bit faded; a few leaves show some very light worming, or are detached and neatly laid in. Decades in the making, this collection of poems, prayers, and meditations addresses moral courage, bridal wishes, life lessons, faith, love, and more. Entries date from 1887 to 1924, some with locations (Delhi, Calcutta), and are contributed by many different people, in their own hand. All of the penmanship is legible, even lovely, with attempts at illuminated lettering and calligraphic flourishes. Also features two tiny b/w photographic portraits, a laid-in leaf, lovely hand-colored decorations (usually floral motifs), and a winding maze of words entitled "A Game of Life." Clearly a lot of care and thought went into every entry. A beautiful volume.

Boards a bit scuffed along the edges; front joint split near head of spine; some browning from the adhesive, and a few scuffs where ephemera has been removed, but in excellent condition internally. Includes 25 tipped-on engravings (including one showing a woman with a child on a leash!), 10 die-cuts, 2 original pencil sketches, and 4 original full-color paintings, and one manuscript inscription. Images include landscapes, portraits, and costume. Nice.

  • Hardcover. Condición: Very Good+. Suede over flexible boards (oblong, 15 by 11.5 inches), with tie closures at fore-edge; contains 35 grey heavy cardstock leaves with original b/w photographs neatly labeled by hand and mounted direct to the rectos only, plus a manuscript title-page and 16 pages of text at the rear (8 leaves, handwritten on rectos and versos, in English). Records a road trip taken August 5th to September 2nd, 1910 -- naming cities, landmarks, and hotels -- sailing from Hoboken on the Kronprinz Wilhelm, then sailing again from Cherbourg to Paris, where the road trip commences. Includes nearly 150 b/w photographs (silver gelatin prints), ranging in size from 2.25-by-3.25 to about 8-by-11 inches. All are nicely composed and exposed, with just a few instances of under- or over-exposure, and some faint silvering here and there. Light scuffing or chipping at spine tips and corners; tie closures frayed and broken; slight wave to text block (from the adhesive), otherwise text block is bright and clean, in excellent condition. A nice variety of street- and landscapes, as well as personal photographs, from the journey on the Kronprinz Wilhelm, to the streets of cities visited, and the villages passed along the way (with a few photographs taken, and labeled, charmingly, "on the fly"). Our photographer includes some nice snapshots of his traveling companions (offering a look at the fashions of the period); candid photographs of people (frequently peasants and children), strangers encountered throughout the trip; windmills; Mont Blanc; ox carts; and more. Text ranges from the direct (they ordered flower bulbs in Haarlem), to the humorous (they were delayed by "officials. ripe for an asylum for the feeble minded"), and approaching the lyrical ("Going home into the sunset, the bottle green water under the sliffs, the grass green lower slopes blue, violet and pinky purple higher, and topped with whitest snow touching the bluest sky a few peaks in clinging clouds"). A rich, unique volume.

Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Full leather (7-by-9 inches), all edges gilt, in hand-made cloth cover with calligraphic initials and floral motif embroidered on front cover; approx. pp. 200, different color papers, more than half full with autographs, prose, poems, and original artwork by numerous contributors. Cloth cover sunned along spine and edges, otherwise fine. A lovely volume. By turns funny and touching, this album compiled by Miss Elsie Nora Turner (who becomes a Mrs. along the way) includes original pen and ink drawings, watercolors, gouache, two sepia photographs (one including a very early image of a car), and 6 pages of autographs (including one with the heading, "My Wedding Day / June 9, 1909." that is signed by her 4 bridesmaids). The artwork, contributed by friends and family, is invariably adept, ranging from the formal landscape, still life, or portrait, to cartoons (a cat caught in a goldfish bowl, a flamingo at battle with a frog, a man with wings abuzz in a field of lady flowers) -- it is sometimes direct on the page, other times tipped into corner slots (and so removable). A drawing of a bridge blown up by the Boers in 1900 is amongst the artwork. Some contribute poetry, including one in defense of women, and another quotes Longfellow's "Hiawatha." The numerous autographs she collects locate most of her friends and family spread throughout England. Interestingly, we know that Miss Turner was married in 1909. There are no entries dated later than 1909, but there is a "Baby's Catechism" clipped from a newspaper and laid-in. Perhaps, by that time, the Mrs. no longer had the time necessary to compile, document, and contribute to such a careful, spirited volume.

Condición: Very Good+. Album of 21 pen-and-ink portraits on laid paper after illustrations to Aliprando Capriolo's 1596 Ritratti di Cento Capitani Illustri. Approximately 185 x 143 mm each, tipped to larger sheets of wove paper. Small folio, [Italy: n.d., ca, 18th century]. Cased in full 18th-century Italian (Neapolitan?) brown calf over pasteboard, tooled in gold all-over, covers with two outer border rolls surrounding three double-ruled panels filled with rolls and solid tools decorated with silver paint (now mostly oxidized), inner panel with tulip tools at corner surrounding cartouche of gouges with center lozenge of floral tools, spine with raised bands in seven compartments with cherub tool, rebacked preserving original spine, later endpapers and edge gilding. For binding, cf. BL c154g12/Davis 859; BL c27e18; Davis III, 380. An 18th-century Italian album of 21 pen-and-ink portraits based on Aliprando Capriolo's Ritratti di Cento Capitani Illustri, 1596. These copies were probably made from Pompillio Totti s edition of Capriolo, Ritratti et Elogil di Capitani Illustri, 1636. Totti altered Capriolo s engravings, adding the coats of arms seen in many of the portraits here. Portraits include Tamerlane, Gattamelata, Roberto Sanseverino, and the condottieri Vitelli brothers. The binding is in a style common to the Salvioni workshop. Davis Gift III, 380, which Foot suggests was bound in an unknown Neapolitan workshop, shows the same wide outer roll on the covers.
