This is identified inside the front cover with black stamp of J. G. BUTLER, USA and on the front flyleaf handwritten - "Jas. G. Butler, Cadet, U. S. M. A. 1st class 1862, dated November 17th, 1862. Very nice association piece. BUTLER was a 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th United States Artillery until June 1863 then transferred to Ordnance Department. Breveted for gallantry at Chicamauga. Stayed in the Army until 1891. Great story behiind this little volume.
