Audience: General/trade. First edition "Fragments of Ancient Poetry" 1760; First edition of "Fingal: An Ancient Epic Poem in Six Books", 1762. Ossian was a third-century bard, according to Highland and Irish oral traditions. He told stories of his youth, his father, Fingal, and his son Oscar. James Macpherson, who compiled Ossian's stories, recounted in blindness, was born in the Highlands, 1736, in an area of the Jacobite uprising, 1745. He published the Ossianic poems to great success in the 1760s. Pressure rose to prove their authenticity. This history recounts the Ossianic timeline, 3rd century A.D. until 2010. Full leather. Condición: Very good. Third edition of The Works of Ossian, The Son of Fingal, as translated by James Macpherson. Ilustrador. Third Edition. Octavo, [two volumes], xxiv, 375pp, [1], [2pp ads]; xlii, [2], 460pp, [4pp ads]. Full leather, title in gilt on spines. Rebacked with new spines, original marbled endpapers saved. Stated "Third Edition" on title page. Both volumes lacking half-title. Solid text blocks, covers with small cracks and chips, decorative gilt board edges rubbed. Dampstain to top corner of Volume I. Previous ownership bookplates belonging to W. Cotton Risley and Edward Seeber affixed to front endpapers. A beautiful example of both volumes, rarely seen together. James Macpherson claimed to have found these poems in the Scottish Highlands and translated them from the original Scottish Gaelic. This claim was doubted by scholars, including Dr. Samuel Johnson, resulting in a literary scandal at the time. Macpherson never did produce the original poems.
