12mo. pp. 1 p.l., 164; 2 p.l., 204. with half-title in Vol. II only. woodcut title vignettes. contemporary sprinkled calf, gilt back (joints cracked, 1 spine label wanting, scattered light foxing, marginal browning to outer leaves, front flyleaf wanting in Vol. I). The French historian, moralist, and political philosopher Mably was an early precursor of socialism. Believing all men to be fundamentally and naturally equal and private property to be the root of all social evils, he advocated a wide range of social, political, and economic reforms, including sumptuary and agrarian legislation, the restriction of industry and commerce, inheritance laws, &c. Mably was ranked with Grotius and Pufendorf as an authority in international relations following the publication of his highly acclaimed treatise on international treaties, Le Droit Public D Europe. The present work, intended as an introduction to that treatise and first published in 1757, provides an analysis of the modus operandi of international negotiations under a variety of conditions, i.e. war, and includes chapters on the formation of alliances and the role of the ambassador. cfCioranescu 41170. cfQuérard V 405. cfTchemerzine VII 265 (a).
