Chr. ebenda ) war ein römischer Dichter, der vor allem für seine Epigramme bekannt ist. - Martials Werke beschränken sich fast ausschließlich auf Epigramme. Vorbilder für seine Dichtung waren Catull und Horaz. - Sein Hauptwerk umfasste zwölf Epigrammbücher. - aus wiki. - PRAEFATIO -- Si verum est, quod nuper summus Lobeckius iecit, omnes festinasse videri, quorum alii libri extent praeter postumos, festinavi, non diffiteor. Sed brevis aevi admonebat fatum hominum doctorum qui his proximis aetatibus Martialis editiones volverunt complurium, antequam ad finem pervenissent extinctorum, Hadr. Beverlandi, Th. Korttii, Fr. Edition rare distribuée par le libraire Jean Frellon portant sa belle et étrange marque : un crabe brandissant un papillon entre ses deux pinces symbole de résurrection. L exemplaire est revêtu d une intéressante reliure lyonnaise frappée d un pégase doré, malheureusement dans un état d usure assez prononcé. Un livre vierge de toute restauration et particulièrement attirant. Livre d'occasion.

Corners and edges somewhat worn, else fine. - A tight copy. - On the title-page and in the colophon, Marnef's famous printer's device: a pelican, on its nest, feeding its young, along with the motto: In me mors, in me vita". - Many engraved initials. - Interior fine, except for the tops of few pages (including the title-page) are being very slightly shaved off . - On the title-page, ownership note in old ink: "Joannes Seager. Coll. / Pembr. Oxon. / ." - Marginal comments in Seager's hand, in English, especially at the end. - The poet Martian, of Spanish origin, is well remembered for his witty description of daily human life in Rome, as well as for his satire. - In the present book, of special interest are the host of very interesting details of the different dishes and wines of the table, given in Liber XIII. He praises Italian wines, especially those of Falernia. - Some of Seager's comments are also n Liber XIII. such as on the margin if the verso of Leaf 188 about " a small fish: the fry of the thynnas', and another on Leaf 193:"sea water brought with the fish".
