The play of The Medea by Euripides that is in both ancient Greek and English translation. Softening and rubbing of the back strip edges; bumping, rubbing and a little fraying of the book corners. Rubbing of the lower book edges. Sunning of the back strip with rubs and marks to the panels  particularly the rear. Bumping along the book edges. Tanning and faint foxing of the text block edges with age toning of the pages. Offset tanning, handling marks and faint foxing of the end pages. Illustrated with a frontispiece and eight plates. Collated complete. A collection of translated extracts from the major Ancient Greek epic poem, The Iliad. The poem is one of the oldest works of literature still read widely by modern audiences, set towards the end of the Trojan War, it follows a ten-year siege of the city of Troy. Attributed to Homer, a Greek poet considered one of the most revered and influential authors in history. Translated by Frank Laurence Lucas, an English classical scholar, literary critic, poet, novelist, playwright, and political polemicist, who was a Fellow of King's College, Cambridge, and intelligence officer at Bletchley Park during World War II. Illustrated by John Buckland Wright, a British printmaker, painter and draughtsman. In the original cream cloth binding. Externally, smart with light shelf wear and the odd mark to the boards. The boards have patches of browning around the top of the front panel, browning to the spine which has slight fraying at the top. The page edges have very slight browning. The front free endpaper has the name of the original owner and a date in ink in the centre but the pages are otherwise clean and unmarked. The jacket has one inch pieces missing at the top of the spine which also has some tearing along the edges. The front panel has three one inch edge tears. The rear panel has a one inch piece missing from the top right corner and some surface wear. First printing of the Folio edition with illustrations by John Buckland-Wright.

There is a long tear across the spine and the front and rear panels which has been repaired to the reverse. Creasing to the top of the front panel and some chipping around the edges. First printing of the Folio edition with illustrations by John Buckland-Wright.
