Vernon Loder (1881-1938) was a pseudonym for John George Hazlette Vahey, an Anglo-Irish writer who also wrote as Henrietta Clandon, John Haslette, Anthony Lang, John Mowbray, Walter Proudfoot and George Varney. The Albatross publishing house had a remarkable history in the 1930s (with links to Tauchnitz). These colour-coded paperbacks with their albatross symbol influenced Allen Lane in the design of Penguin Books. The name Albatross was chosen as it was similar in many languages.
