Er wurde 1673 in Paris geboren und war zunächst Schüler bei seinem Vater Etienne Picart (1632-1721), dann von Benoit Audran d.Ä. und ab 1689 von Sebastien Le Clerc (1637-1714). An der Academie Royale studierte er Zeichnen. Im Jahre 1696 ging er an die Akademie in Antwerpen und 1698 nach Amsterdam, wo er als Buchillustrator tätig war. Später wieder in Paris war er vor allem als Stecher tätig. Als er sich 1711 in Amsterdam niederließ, hatte er bereits einen ausgezeichneten Ruf als Kupferstecher und Graveur. Berühmt waren seine detailgetreuen Stiche nach Zeichnungen berühmter Maler. Für seinen eigenen Bild-Kompositionen war u.a. Antoine Coypel sein Vorbild. Zu seinen Schülern gehörte auch Jacob van der Schley (1715-1779). Picart hinterließ ein umfangreiches Oeuvre mit ca. 1300 Blättern. Kupferstich (nach dem Original 1672, um 1825) über den Moment, in dem die Armeen von Alexander dem Großen 334 v. Chr. nach Asien eindrangen. Im Kampf mit der persischen Armee am Ufer des Flusses Granicus (Kocabas) in der Nähe der Stätte des alten Troja. Alexander wird mitten in der Komposition von Persern mit geflügelten Helmen und Turbanen umringt. Das Schicksal seiner Feinde wird durch die Axt Clitus des Schwarzen besiegelt, eines Offiziers in Alexanders Elite-Kavallerie. Die Darstellung des Bildes weist auf Alexanders Triumph als Beweis für heldenhafte, fürstliche Tugend hin. Das Motto des Drucks lautet: "Tugend überwindet alle Hindernisse - La vertu surmonte tout obstacle". In der Gravur: Unten links: Le Brun pinx. - Charles Le Brun war der bedeutendste und einflussreichste Künstler des frazösischen Königs Ludwig XIV. 1662 zum "Premier Peintre du Roi" ernannt, arbeitete er als Maler und Designer in den Königshäusern Fontainebleau und im Louvre. Weltbekannt ist er für seinen Beitrag zur Dekoration von Versailles im Jahr 1670. - Motiv: 17,5 x 24,5 auf Blatt: 20,5 x 36,5. * Blatt gebräunt und mit kleiner Textfehlstelle in der unteren Bildlegende. - In einem rotbraunen mit Kupferecken verstärkten Holzrahmen unter Glas.

Lithograph, after Langlois, printed by Engelmann, Graf, Coindet & Co. This plate, from Charles Le Brun's study of human types and animals, demonstrates the resemblance between a man and a horse. Charles Le Brun (1619-1690) was a painter, architect, designer and author. He studied with Vouet and Poussin. Being acquainted with Colbert, he became one of Louis XIV's primary assistants in the designing and decorating of Versailles and other royal building projects. He also wrote an essay on physiognomy: an edition was published in 1827 ("Dissertation sur un traité de Charles Le Brun concernant le rapport de la physionomie humaine avec celle des animaux"). The present image is from this edition, which included lithographic plates printed by Engelmann Graf Coindet & Co. after various artists.
