Reprinted from the original 1855 edition, edited with notes by Paul C. Phillips. xviii, 292pp. Facsimile of original title page, 4 plates. Notes, appendix, index. Brick cloth lettered and decorated in gilt. A fine copy. "This account is acclaimed by many sources as one of the best written of all overland narratives" (Mintz). "Franklin Langworthy started for California on April 1, 1850, from near Galena, Illinois, followed the California Trail, and arrived at the Humboldt Sink on October 2. He crossed the Sierra Nevada by way of Carson Pass and arrived at Sacramento on October 27 Langworthy spent two years traveling throughout California and the mining regions and presented his readers with a compact, but vividly written description of the mines, mining methods, and mining society. His accounts of thievery and gambling halls painted a sordid picture of the land of gold. He also wrote of the November 1852 fire in Sacramento; Dr. Bourne's hydropathy (see above under "Bosqui"); bull and bear fights; San Francisco; and the burning of the S.S. Lewis " (Kurutz). First edition. First edition. 8vo, Original blind stamped brown cloth, titles stamped on the spine, vi, 7 - 324 pp., preface. An important overland narrative. Superbly written account of the author's trek from Council Bluffs to the Gold Fields of California. Descriptions of the Platte, Fort Laramie, Salt Lake Valley, and the Nevada deserts. Langworthy's account of the overland trip, occupies the first 180 pages of the book, the remainder is devoted to his description of California and his return trip, by way of Nicaragua. The author makes the following statement about Mormon government on pages 96 & 97: "The Government (if Government it can be called,) is a kind of Military-ecclesiastical despotism. Their Chief, at present, is Brigham Young, the successor of Joe Smith. His powers, as a ruler of the Mormons, not being derived from the people, but like that of Mahomet, directly from God himself. He is a priest, prophet, and virtually a king, his word being the end of the law in all cases. He holds in his hands the power of life and death over all persons in the valley, whether citizens or Mormons." Wear to top front corner, light wear to spine ends, spine titles are dulled but readable, entire text is foxed, else a solid very good copy of an important overland narrative.

First edition. Octavo. 324 pp. Publisher's dark brown cloth, blocked in blind on front and back, black-stamped spine lettering. Some wear to spine extremities and tips. Usual scattered foxing (but predominantly to the edges of the text block). Overall, a very good copy "Franklin Langworthy started for California on April 1, 1850, from near galena, Illinois, followed the California Trail, and arrived at the Humboldt Sink on October 2. He crossed over the Sierra Nevada by way of Carson Pass and arrived at Sacramento on October 27. While in the vicinity of Placerville, he noted that 'cooking seems to be one of the most lucrative employments.' Langworthy spent two years traveling throughout California and the mining regions and presented his readers with a compact, but vividly written description of the mines, mining methods and mining society. His accounts of thievery and gambling halls painted a sordid picture of the land of gold. He also wrote of the November 1852 fire in Sacramento; Dr. Bourne's hydropathy; bull and bear fights; San Francisco; and the burning of the S.S. Lewis. These observations are balanced with positive statements about California's flora, fauna, and agricultural wealth" (Kurutz). Wheat, Gold Rush, 122. Graff 2392. Kurutz, Gold Rush, 392. Sabin 38904.
