Condición: Good. Full page illustration to each opening & text illustrations [36] to facing page. Illustrations signed Hansi throughout. Landscape folio pictorial colored and gilt covers [edges sl.browned anda bit marked but pictorial part of covers not affected] All edges red. Half title + Pictorial title + 32pp + index leaf + oval christmas tree illustration to final leaf.Paper slightly tanned with five pages with some shipping to lower edge, never near printed area and mostly without paper loss but the paper is slightly brittle to the edge. Laid in is a later Publisher's list of four pages of works by Hansi and others dated to November 1916. A pro-French childrens book depicting idyllc French communities in Alcace, in contrast to the German occupation. *Waltz was a staunchly pro-French Alsatian and this work seeks to reinforce anti-German sentiment. He was arrested in 1914, but escaped to join the French Army and continued to publish pro-French childrens books. He was forced to flee to Vichy France in 1940, fearing reprisal from the Gestapo, after which he fled to Switzerland. 1 volume. Hardcover.

Un volume in-4 oblong de 35 pages, 16 belles illustrations couleurs à pleine page (dont la page de titre) et in-texte. Papier jauni sur l'ensemble et quelques petites rousseurs sur le faux-titre, quelques pages décousues. Percaline bleu ciel d'éditeur orné de petites fleurs et d'un encadrement représentant une petite alsacienne en costume traditionnel à gauche du premier plat, titre et auteur en noir et or, tranches rouges. Reliure signée Engel. Petite fente à la percaline en pied du dos et en tête, petites taches sur les deux plats. D abord dessinateur de cartes postales, dans lesquelles il illustre des scènes de la vue quotidienne alsacienne, Waltz se tourne vers le dessin pamphlétaire après sa rencontre avec des artistes de la Revue alsacienne, revue qui fait la promotion de la culture alsacienne et de ses racines françaises. Il participe à des manifestations contre l annexion allemande, et de 1907 à 1914, publie plusieurs séries de planches et cartes ainsi que des uvres littéraires marquées par son emprunte particulière : des personnages allemands tournés en dérision. Mais c est en 1912 avec Le Professeur Knatschké, qu il publie son premier véritable ouvrage antigermanique, suivi de L Histoire d Alsace racontée aux petits-enfants et Mon Village. Ces succès nationaux lui valent d être considéré comme un symbole de la résistance alsacienne à l Allemagne. Pour Mon Village, Hansi est condamné à un an de prison pour s être moqué des gendarmes et professeurs allemands. Néanmoins, le succès de ces ouvrages témoigne du partage de ses idées par la population alsacienne à l époque.
