Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fair. Das größt Werk der polnischen Dichtung. Nach einem Jahrhundert der Weltbühne erschlossen. Eine geniale Vision unserer Zeit. (This is a great work of Polish poetry. After a century this work is adapted for the world stage. A brilliant vision of our time.) *********************************** Count Zygmunt Krasinski was part of the large expatriate group of Polish emigres (many of them nobility) that left Poland for places like Paris and Geneva in the second half of the 18th century (called the Great Emigration) when Poland was partitioned amongst the Russian Empire, the Kingdom of Prussia and the Habsburg Monarchy of Austria. Thus Krasinski was born in Paris. Despite his expatriate status, he is considered one of the triumvirate of Polish National Romantic Bards, the other two being Slowacki and Mickiewicz. ************************************ Being born into the aristocracy endowed Krasinski with a conservative viewpoint (he was the son of a general. His writing had a decided philosophical messianist tendency and, despite his political conservatism , he was influenced by the Gothic movement in fiction, and by Dante. The book offered here, "Die Ungöttliche Komödie" is a German translation of " Nie-boska Komedia" ( In English , "The Ungodly Comedy", or "The Un-Divine Comedy"). It is a verse drama in four acts. It was first issued in 1835. ************************************** In this work Count Krasinski voiced the fears of the older aristocracy, of which he was a part, of their coming 'defeat' by the rising tide of Communism and Democracy. This was, in part, their tragedy. It is a prophetic warning of the coming class conflict and, amazingly enough, of the October Revolution in Russia. [Thanks to Wikipedia for this information.] ************************************ TITLE : Die Ungöttliche Komödie, Dramatisches Gedicht in vier Teilen AUTHOR : Zygmunt Krasinski (Count Napoleon Stanislaw Adam Ludwig Zygmunt Krasinski, 1812 - 1859) / TRANSLATION : Adapted for the stage by Franz Theodor Csokor / AFTERWORD : Franz Theodor Csokor / IMPRINT : Paul Zsolnay / PLACE : Berlin, Germany / DATE : (1936) / EDITION : First Thus / STATUS : OP - Out of Print in the United States / PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Small trade hardcover; Contains a photograph portrait of Krasinski (on his death bed!); contains an afterword; 143 pages; approximately 4 5/8" x 7 3/8"; dark charcoal-gray cloth with title lettered in the sam against a gold panel on the spine; pictorial dust-jacket, which features an oval portrait of Krasinski on the front panel. ************************************** CONDITION - VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned book that remains clean and serviceable, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR : Slight abrasion to spine extremities, else clean and presentable; Slight abrasion to corner tips of boards, else clean and presentable; text-block edges have mild toning and a touch of small spotting, else clean. / BINDING : Fairly Solid - it is obvious that the book has been read, albeit with care - the leaves open readily / INTERIOR : End-papers are toned, with a touch of foxing (or spotting) else clean; the text is clean and presentable throughout with but negligible signs of use and no marking , no writing. The previous owner, Professor Browning, a professor of German Literature at Hamilton College, lightly penciled his last name on both the front flyleaf and the title page.
