Hardcover. Condición: g. Reprint. Folio. V, [3], 231, [1], XVIIIpp (plates). Original illustrated dust-jacket over brown cloth with gold lettering on spine. In this remarkable work originally published in 1916, German archaeologists Kohl and Watzinger made significant advances in scholarly understanding with their work done on behalf of the Deutsche Orient Gesellschaft. They mapped and/or partially excavated eleven ancient synagogues. They were startled by the pagan symbols they found and tried to explain them within a historical context. Because all the Galilean sites worked on could be assigned to the late second and third century C.E., they hypothesized that the Antonine and Severean Caesars were so favorably inclined to the Jews that they gave these synagogues as imperial donations to the various Jewish communities of the Galilee. This study is profusely illustrated with numerous in-text and full-page b/w photographic reproductions. Text in German. Dust-jacket foxed and slightly creased along upper edges. Pages slightly sunned throughout. Dust-jacket in overall fair to good, binding and interior in good condition.
