Hardcover. Condición: Good. Limited Edition. Here is Rudyard Kipling's two famous collections of military and government bureaucracy - themed poems. Call them patriotic . Call them Stout-hearted . Call them fostering empire. The poems are pure Rudyard Kipling, and were hugely popular in the English - speaking world when first released. That popularity has continued through the years . and they remain, surely, pure Rudyard Kipling. They include the famous poems "Tommy", "Fuzzy - Wuzzy", "Gunga - Din" (You're a better man than I am, Gunga Din!"), and "Recessional". This slim little hardcover book is an early Peter Pauper Press edition. It was released in a limited print run of 1,000 copies, printed with Bodoni Book type, and printed on tan Arak paper at the Walpole Printing Office, in New Rochelle New York. This is likely the Second printing, as the book lacks the gilt top edge that was given to the first limited print run of 1,000 (Printed in 1934). There is a dated Christmas inscription from 1941, and so this copy can have been printed no later than November or December 1941. It's a handsome affair, printed during the first years of a dominating World War. Peter Pauper made the best of it, using Arak paper, and printing the book with brown ink, which color also was given the borders on each page. The title page has Kipling's name rubricated, as is the paper title placed on the wrap-around spine label. ****************************************** The Christmas gift inscription (Isabel Bradshaw, Christmas 1941, from Jimmie) precedes the donation of the book to the Georgetown , New York, Community Library. That library is no longer in existence. The book has, on the front end-paper the gift inscription , and the donor stamp for the library, into which the name of Isabel Bradshaw was inked by hand. There is a withdrawn stamp. On the rear end-papers are a library pocket , with card still inserted, and another stamp of the Georgetown Community Library. There is , also, on the rear paste-down, the small detritus from a no longer existing library label. On the spine is a fairly modern catalog label. [Short Stories / Strange Tales] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (21 x 14cm), pp.[2] vi; 393 [23]. Publisher's red cloth with gilt titles to spine, and gilt elephant motif stamped to upper. Top edge gilt. Some toning and spotting to edges and endpapers; internally clean. A little toning and wear to spine. Near fine. A quality collection of short stories including the remarkable 'Mrs. Bathurst', with its theme of destructive power and obsessive love, plus the strange tale 'Wireless' which concerns spirit possession, as well as the classic ghost story 'They'; an unsettling tale about a lost motorist and his encounter with a blind woman at the isolated 'House Beautiful', being a companion, rather than a sequel, to the earlier 'Brushwood Boy' fantasy which sees the reappearance of the characters 'Them'. Adept at short fiction, Kipling penned many 'uncanny tales', some being subtle fantasies (They, The Brushwood Boy, The Eye of Allah), whilst others were more overtly supernatural or scientific romances in the manner of Edgar Allan Poe (The Phantom 'Rickshaw, The Mark of the Beast, The Night Mail). Kipling wrote of new inventions and future wars, warned of the social consequences of technological change, and exerted an the most lasting influence on modern science fiction and fantasy writing, according to leading SF writer Poul Anderson; indeed his stories of India, with notions of an (earthly) alien in a strange world are the most salient predecessors of golden age sci-fi. Kipling later stressed he was 'not diving after physical experiences', although he was exposed to and described uncanny events, and was much aware of the irrational premises and feelings of others; his formative professional years were spent in India, a country with a widespread belief in ghosts and spirit reincarnation, and at a time when matters 'psychic' were fashionable throughout Europe.

[Strange Tales] FIRST EDITION. Octavo (21 x 14cm), pp.[6] 301 [13]. Advertisements date Autumn 1909. Publisher's red cloth with pictorial gilt medallion to upper, and gilt titles to spine. Top edge gilt. No inscriptions, some toning to endleaves, minor wear to covers, spine and extremities slightly sunned. Near fine. A quality collection of weird stories including 'With the Night Mail: A Story of 2000 A.D.', a futurist fantasy which explores the social and technical side of a world economy based on air traffic. Also contains 'The House Surgeon', Kipling's psychic detective mystery with obvious borrowing's from Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes and Dr.Watson- even the haunted house setting is called 'Holmesmead'. Many of Kipling's tales feature elements of the supernatural, likely inspired by his brush with Madam Blavatsky and her 'occult phenomena', and through his dealings with Doyle and leading psychic Sir Oliver Lodge; Kipling was fascinated by what he called 'Theosophy', but unlike Doyle's embrace of Spiritualism, he remained unconverted, although his stories would be steeped in paranormal activity. Kipling stressed he was 'not diving after physical experiences', although he was exposed to and described uncanny events, and was much aware of the irrational premises and feelings of others; his formative professional years were spent in India, a country with a widespread belief in ghosts and spirit re-incarnation, and at a time when matters 'psychic' were fashionable throughout Europe.
